The Beethoven sonata opening the program, the poignant and ultimately triumphant No. 31 (Opus 110), has been described as the most personal and unique of his thirty-two sonatas. As for Chopin, Schumann, and Rachmaninoff, virtually the entirety of their respective outputs are intensely personal in expression and style. The program concludes with Debussy’s atmospheric and jubilantly brilliant “L’Isle Joyeuse”.
