Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Author Reading | Damion Searls reads from the book Bright Magic

A reading by Damion Searls of his new translation of Alfred Döblin’s Bright Magic: Stories, and a conversation between the translator and Eric Banks, Director of the New York Institute for the Humanities. Alfred Döblin was a titan of modern German literature. This collection of stories — astonishingly, the first collection of his stories ever published in English — shows him to have been equally adept in shorter forms. Included in its entirety is Döblin’s first book, The Murder of a Buttercup, a work of savage brilliance and a landmark of literary expressionism.

Young Harlem composers like George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart gravitated to these challenging and inspired rhythms introduced by Harlem’s early black composers, including James Reese Europe, H. T. Burleigh and the theatrical music and comedy team of Williams and Walker.

Discussion | Blacklisted: From Hollywood to Paris

Hollywood has long been criticized for its lack of inclusion of filmmakers, actors, and professionals from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Initiatives to tackle this issue have emerged following the #OscarsSoWhite polemic. Conversely, one might wonder whether the French film industry, which has a strong tradition of supporting African, Middle-Eastern, Asian and Latino-American cinema, accurately reflects the cultural diversity within its own borders. Panelists Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche, Claire Diao and Nina Shaw consider how the complex and diverging histories of each country have impacted their respective film industries.

Dance Performance | 1956-2016: A Festive Comedy: A Dance Work Celebrating Anti-Soviet Uprisings

Featuring new work from Krisztián Gergye, one of the most prominent contemporary dance choreographers, this performance asks a piercing, deeply disturbing pair of questions: how can heroism remain viable as a political attitude and how can remembrance continue to function in the mediatized and relativizing environment of the late modern sign economy.
