Classical Music | A celebration of music by Anton Webern

Hailed by the New Yorker as “expert and versatile musicians,” NOVUS NY String Quartet perform works by Webern and more. Program Webern (1883-1945) Passacaglia, Op. 1 Webern (1883-1945) Im Sommerwind, Op. 21 Webern (1883-1945) Das Augenlicht, Op. 26 Webern (1883-1945) Kantate #2, Op. 31 Brahms (1833-1897) A German Requiem Anton Webern, the noted Austrian composer and conductor, remembered for his atonal and serial works, was one of the key figures in the Second Viennese School. Unfortunately, with the rise of Nazis, his music was banned and he spent the last decade of his life in financial constraint and musical isolation. He was not very prolific composer, publishing only 31 works during his lifetime. Yet, he left a great impression with his radical compositions, influencing both his contemporaries and younger generations of musicians.

Gallery Talk | Charting the Divine Plan: The Art of Orra White Hitchcock (1796–1863): Exhibition Tour

The exhibition explores the confluence of art, love, science, and religion in the extraordinary art of Orra White Hitchcock, one of America’s first female scientific illustrators. Her marriage in 1821 to Amherst College professor Edward Hitchcock cemented a years-long friendship and collaboration based on a bedrock of faith and science, mutual respect, close observation, and mental capacity for the largest of ideas. Orra White exhibited a prodigious scientific mind and abundant artistic talent at an early age. The exhibition traces her development from schoolgirl projects to highly accomplished renderings of the natural scenery of the Connecticut River Valley used in her husband’s many geology publications. Less well known are colorful paintings on cotton—some more than twelve feet long—that were used to illustrate her husband’s many college lectures on geology, botany, zoology, and anatomy. In these, Orra White Hitchcock communicated complex scientific principles in abstract visual terms that now appear gorgeously fresh and modern.

Other | A Memorial for the Artist Z'EV

The artist Z’EV passed away this winter. Remembrances will be offered by friends, colleagues, and community members. In addition, a number of musical events presented by friends and collaborators will honor Z’EV. Z’EV (born Stephan Joel Weisser) was a composer/percussionist, visual artist, poet and theorist. Since the late 1970s, he created his own abstract percussion soundscapes out of found materials, and he is regarded as a pioneer of industrial music (though he did not like the term himself). In his long career, he created unique performance strategies to explore sound in spaces, starting with acoustic sound and later working also with electronic sound. Critic Roy Sablosky wrote: "Z'EV doesn't just break the rules, he changes them." Journalist Louis Morra wrote in 1983: "Z'EV is a consummate example of contemporary performance art, as well as modern composition and theater;" and "Z'EV realizes many of modernist art's ultimate goals: primitivism, improvisation, multi-media/conjunction of art forms, the artist as direct creator."

Concert | Art-Pop and Electronic Minimalism

"The art-pop duo and original poster-boys for New York City's electroclash scene" (NPR) have come storming back with a fresh embrace of sensuality, lust, and love, and a new stage show that is not for the prudish. As pioneers of the early '00s electroclash movement, Fischerspooner combined sly performance art with elements of new wave and techno, leading wild dance parties with unabashed showmanship. Based in Brooklyn, Xeno & Oaklander are a minimal electronics girl/boy duo that began writing music and soundtracks in 2004. Liz Wendelbo, who is French / Norwegian, and Sean McBride, from Maryland, record their songs live in their Brooklyn studio and play analogue synthesizers and instruments exclusively. Having toured the United States, Europe, and Russia, Xeno & Oaklander play extensively in New York in music venues, art establishments, and festivals such as Chaos in Tejas, Buchla Source of Uncertainty, and the Moog showcase at SXSW—and they come to the Bandshell for the first time this year. Juliana Huxtable, "a mind whose output transcends prescribed limitations," (artnet) is a multi-faceted artist who explores the intersections of race, gender, queerness, and identity in various formats—through music, social media, self portraiture, and performance. She also knows her way around a turntable, and will DJ before and in between Xeno & Oaklander's and Fischerspooner's sets.
