Other | The Hot Dog Bus hands out free hot dogs

Artist Erwin Wurm has transformed a vintage Volkswagen Microbus into an overstuffed food truck serving free dogs! It's an absurd, yet approachable art experience that will encourage visitors to rethink the fundamental definitions of sculpture. Wurm's choice of the hot dog hints at the gastronomic connections between the City’s most iconic street food and his Austrian homeland, while he considers the act of eating to be an additive sculptural process in its own right.

Author Paul Kaplan will discuss how this relentless advocate for the welfare of children, called "one of the least-known yet most important people" by President Franklin Roosevelt, became responsible for many of the social and health-related programs we take for granted today. A campaigner for school lunches and nurses in public schools and an early promoter of women's suffrage, Wald was adept at navigating both the poorest neighborhoods and the upper circles of society, where she sought donors to support her efforts.

Lecture | The first woman in Hollywood

Most people have no idea that, the first American movie star was Blanche Walsh, a great forgotten actress of the past who like many accomplished women in the arts and in other fields has been banished to the margins of historical memory. Until now. In 1912 Walsh starred in the now lost silent film Resurrection, based on Tolstoy’s bestselling third novel. Contrary to popular opinion, Birth of a Nation was not the first American feature film. It was Adolph Zukor’s Resurrection, a rich, complex story about love and social justice that’s as relevant today as it was a century ago. This is also a deeply personal story for today’s speaker, educator and talk show host John Bredin, who has a fascinating biographical link to Blanche Walsh which he’ll reveal during the talk. Bredin hopes to encourage a new “Hollywood for the greater good” moving forward. In a Q & A after the lecture, he invites the audience to help him ponder this intriguing possibility.
