Classical Music | Bach at Noon

The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term 'baroque' has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was 'maestro di capella' at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today's music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi's advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 10, 2019 to May 20, 2020.

Performance | Missing Time: A New Immersive Sound Performance

Artist Serena Korda's Missing Time considers the history and mythology of the High Line as a “thin place”—a portal to other worlds—while exploring its transformation and invisible histories. The piece features the a cappella group Mouthful (Dave Camlin, Sharon Durant, Bex Mather, and Katherine Zeserson), who improvise across specific frequencies derived from the planets otherwise known as the “Music of the Spheres.” Simultaneously, the singers carry very low frequency receivers; these are devices designed by amateur radio astronomers hoping to listen to radio waves coming from the sun or outer planets. Visitors experience the singers’ voices and manipulated radio waves through stereo headphones that play a version of the sounds captured through a microphone located under the pathway and mixed by the artist.

Opening Reception | Meditations: Paintings by Mark Zimmermann

Mark Zimmermann's work is based on the fusion of meditative fields, architectonic structures and an organic gestural line that is one-part intentional and one-part accidental. Zimmermann clearly demonstrates his deftness of hand through labored bands of color, building and editing one band upon other, until the editing process renders compositions that combine both hard-edge and action-painting abstraction. His process begins by layering an initial ground laid down with palette knives and trowels. From there, the initial drawing gives shape to the composition to come. Over time, the elements are pushed back with repeated layers of a viscous wash and then brought back into play via sanding and then the process begins anew. By way of intent and incident the true pure nature of the work takes shape and the final composition presents itself. Mark Zimmermann has exhibited across the United States and abroad. His work is held in private and public collections such as JW Marriott Essex House Hotel, New York, NY, The Four Seasons Hotel, Washington, D.C., the Marriott Convention Center, Schaumburg, IL,The Palazzo Hotel and Resort, Las Vegas, NV, Norwegian Cruise Line, The Parisian Sands Macau Hotel, Macau, China, to name a few. The artist lives and works in New York City.

Opening Reception | Triad: Group Exhibition

A group exhibition featuring American artists James Busby, Tom Sanford and Christian Schumann. The triad extends from three disparate points–Chapin, South Carolina; Harlem, New York; and Austin, Texas, respectively–but of artistic sensibilities as well. Here, three aesthetics converge: classical representation, formal abstraction and pop art mimetism. These seemingly disparate elements triangulate not in divergent opposition but in alignment with a sort of fraternity of modern painters.

Book Club | Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway: one of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923

Mrs Dalloway details a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a fictional high-society woman in post–First World War England. Created from two short stories, "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" and the unfinished "The Prime Minister," the novel addresses Clarissa's preparations for a party she will host that evening. With an interior perspective, the story travels forwards and back in time and in and out of the characters' minds to construct an image of Clarissa's life and of the inter-war social structure. Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is considered one of the most important modernist 20th-century authors and a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device.

This tour will tell the story of the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge, and examine its ever-present historical, technological, and cultural impact.
