Gallery Talk | Charting the Divine Plan: The Art of Orra White Hitchcock (1796–1863): Curator's Tour

The exhibition explores the confluence of art, love, science, and religion in the extraordinary art of Orra White Hitchcock, one of America’s first female scientific illustrators. Her marriage in 1821 to Amherst College professor Edward Hitchcock cemented a years-long friendship and collaboration based on a bedrock of faith and science, mutual respect, close observation, and mental capacity for the largest of ideas. Orra White exhibited a prodigious scientific mind and abundant artistic talent at an early age. The exhibition traces her development from schoolgirl projects to highly accomplished renderings of the natural scenery of the Connecticut River Valley used in her husband’s many geology publications. Less well known are colorful paintings on cotton—some more than twelve feet long—that were used to illustrate her husband’s many college lectures on geology, botany, zoology, and anatomy. In these, Orra White Hitchcock communicated complex scientific principles in abstract visual terms that now appear gorgeously fresh and modern. With: Stacy C. Hollander, acting director of the museum.

Classical Music | A celebration of music by Anton Webern

Hailed by the New Yorker as “expert and versatile musicians,” NOVUS NY String Quartet led by Julian Wachner perform works by Webern and more. This concert is a part of a concert series focused on the complete works of Anton Webern; the trademark of the series is the juxtaposition of early and modern music. Program Webern (1883-1945) 4 Stücke für Violine und Klavier, Op. 7 Webern (1883-1945) 3 Kleine Stücke für Violoncello und Klavier, Op. 11 Webern (1883-1945) Quartet, Op. 22 Webern (1883-1945) Variationen für Klavier, Op. 27 Epstein (b.1959) Oil and Sugar and Wonders of the Invisible World Holliger (1939) Harp Sequenza Rouse (b.1949) Compline Anton Webern, the noted Austrian composer and conductor, remembered for his atonal and serial works, was one of the key figures in the Second Viennese School. Unfortunately, with the rise of Nazis, his music was banned and he spent the last decade of his life in financial constraint and musical isolation. He was not very prolific composer, publishing only 31 works during his lifetime. Yet, he left a great impression with his radical compositions, influencing both his contemporaries and younger generations of musicians.

Concert | Aimee Mann: Grammy and Oscar Nominee Named by NPR as One of the 10 Best Living Songwriters

Aimee Mann is at the height of her powers: her mostly acoustic 2017 record Mental Illness is her "quintessential statement, tempering the discord of life with elegant chamber-folk." (Pitchfork) Since the early '90s she has steadily built a remarkable catalogue that includes nine studio albums and countless special projects, always anchored by her contemplative lyrics and gorgeous, lilting melodies. Her original contributions to the soundtrack of Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece Magnolia earned her both Grammy and Academy Award nominations. The seminal pop-punk band Superchunk co-headlines, riding a wave of momentum generated by their 2018 release What a Time to Be Alive, a snarling polemic against our current political moment. The band's punk-influenced DIY ethos led members Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance to found an independent label in 1989 to release their own music, and that label, Merge Records, went on to stratospheric success. Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and raconteur Jonathan Coulton, known for his songs about geek culture and technology, opens.

Performance | No More Shimmering Cowboys: A One-Woman Sci-Fi Telenovela

Sin Ti is a spectacular act of intimacy between a woman and the void. Live cinema, physical storytelling, theater, music, and a room of mirrors set the stage for Yara Travieso's one-woman sci-fi telenovela. At once intimate, voyeuristic, and drenched in spectacle, Sin Ti dives deep into the mind of a woman in an emotional rebellion against "the gaze." Shattering the expectations of the traditional "love story" is part of a continued dismantling process for Travieso who creates neo-feminist myths.
