Book Club | David Downing's Jack of Spies

Set in 1913 before WWI erupts, Jack McColl, a multi-lingual Scottish luxury car salesman, actually has another profession as a spy for His Majesty’s Secret Service. The novel begins in China where he falls for an American suffragette journalist and continues into America and then Great Britain. Besides the problem of the WWI crisis the British also must deal with the Irish Republican movement. And McColl’s journalist lover is an Irish-American. David Downing has written a series of espionage thrillers known as "The Station Series" because they are all named after train stations (mostly in Berlin), based around Anglo-American character John Russell exploring Germany in the 1940s. Jack of Spies, the first novel in a new series set before, during and after World War I, was published in September 2013.

Symposium | Bauhaus Imaginista: 'Learning From' -- Cultural Materials in a New Context

This symposium will ask what it means to take cultural materials and inscribe them within a new context, whether this is done by the 19th-century ethnographic museum, the avant-garde artist, the mid-century teaching collection or in contemporary art. Specifically, it will explore questions of appropriation and representation and the ‘learning from’ in the work of Bauhaus émigrés and their students who collected a wide range of materials indigenous to the Americas. These questions will be considered in tandem with where these debates stand today.
