Concert | Family Day Concert: Bluegrass and Gullah Music

The lineup features two bands making distinctly American music. Railroad Earth, a bluegrass-influenced jam band from Stillwater, New Jersey, takes its name from the Jack Kerouac prose poem "October in the Railroad Earth." Formed in the aftermath of the band From Good Homes' breakup, the group serves up an improvisational take on bluegrass with a tinge of folk, Celtic, jazz, and rock in the tradition of bands like The Grateful Dead, String Cheese Incident, and Phish. Charleston, South Carolina's Ranky Tanky is more specifically southern, specializing in jazz-influenced arrangements of traditional Gullah music, created by the descendants of enslaved Africans in the southeastern U.S.' Lowcountry region. The band's name-which comes from a Gullah expression that translates to "get funky" pulls lyrics and melodies from Gullah spirituals, children's rhymes, and dance music rooted in West African rhythms.

An intimate conversation with artist and master forger Guy Woodard, about his work featured in the current exhibition We the People. Woodard describes the stories and inspiration for the featured works, and what influences his practice. Elevating the ballpoint pen to a tool for fine art, the photorealist detail with which Woodard renders in his drawings is unparalleled. The narratives illustrated by many of the works reveal the challenges and promise of our current society as we grapple with mass incarceration and police violence. Play | The Bacchae: The Classical Theatre of Harlem Presents Euripides’ Classic Tragedy

Set in the modern era, Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him. The clash between Dionysus, played as a modern-day rock star and his cousin Pentheus, the uncompromising and moralistic king of the city, examines the consequences of a general public that blindly follows two vastly different leaders. Dionysus represents unbridled freedom and excess while on the other end of the spectrum, Pentheus epitomizes excessive law, order and rigidity. As society slides into fear and tribalism, its citizen’s rationale becomes clouded as they blindly take orders and pick sides rather than seek moderation and rationality. CTH’s interpretation is a lush and modern version of the classic Greek tragedy that tackles the ills of a culture obsessed with celebrity worship, social media and fear of the other, causing people to lose the ability to see the truth — that people in power are fallible…until it’s far too late. A New Version by Bryan Doerries. Directed by Carl Cofield. Choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Thursdays - Sundays, July 11-28, 2019
