Gallery Talk | Made in New York City: The Business of Folk Art: Exhibition Tour

Folk art has flourished in the heart of New York City since the eighteenth century, contrary to popular belief that it was a rural genre that reflected local tastes, traditions, and needs. Around 100 works of art by self-taught artists tell the story about New York City as the center of America’s financial and commercial world from two perspectives simultaneously: “The Art of Business” portrays the people and places that were part of the city’s thrumming commercial life, and “The Business of Art” highlights the diverse mediums and formats used by the artists, artisans, and manufacturers. This tour of the exhibition is conducted by museum gallery guides.

Opera | Handel's Rinaldo

The New York Opera Forum presents a concert version of the opera Rinaldo by George Frederick Handel. Rinaldo is an opera by George Frideric Handel, composed in 1711, and was the first Italian language opera written specifically for the London stage. The story of love, war and redemption, set at the time of the First Crusade, is loosely based on Torquato Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme liberata ("Jerusalem Delivered"), and its staging involved many original and vivid effects. It was a great success with the public, despite negative reactions from literary critics hostile to the contemporary trend towards Italian entertainment in English theatres.

Play | Romeo and Juliet: Shakespeare in the Parking Lot

This popular New York summer institution is now in its 25th year. Its concept--presenting Shakespeare plays with a "poor theater" aesthetic in a working parking lot--is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. The Drilling Company, led by Artistic Director Hamilton Clancy, has produced the attraction since 2005. The play exquisitely demonstrates the futility of partisanship, pleading for similar people to stop killing each other for reasons they no longer remember. Director Lukas Raphael will set the play in New York in the early 1990's, with the Montagues and Capulets imagined as families of a Lower East Side neighborhood. In this concept, the Capulets (Juliet's people) are long standing stewards of the neighborhood. Romeo's Montagues, on the other hand, are upwardly mobile, eager to rise above it. Screening | German Silent Movie With Live Music And Dance

Alloy Orchestra is a musical ensemble that performs its own accompaniments to silent films of the classic movie era. It has "rejuvenated the art of silent film with thrillingly quirky, percussive scores" (Entertainment Weekly). They return to the Bandshell with their mesmerizing score to the 1925 German masterpiece Variete, which was almost impossible to see until a recent restoration of the print. A tale of love, deception, revenge and redemption set in the circus, it was directed by Ewald Andre Dupont and stars Emil Jannings (the first ever recipient of the Academy Award for best actor) as a trapeze "catcher" and Lya De Putti as the beguiling hoochy coochy dancer he loves. Brooklyn's venerable feminist acrobatic modern dance troupe Lava will astound and amaze before the film with a program that combines new work and circus-themed classics. Lava is known for awe-inspiring feats that push the boundaries of dance, gravity and gender expectations. Lava's choreographic language incorporates acrobatics, trapeze, social dance, sports, contact improv and other contemporary forms, and the work they create explores geologic and anthropological phenomena as metaphors for human relationships and expression.

Play | The Bacchae: The Classical Theatre of Harlem Presents Euripides’ Classic Tragedy

Set in the modern era, Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him. The clash between Dionysus, played as a modern-day rock star and his cousin Pentheus, the uncompromising and moralistic king of the city, examines the consequences of a general public that blindly follows two vastly different leaders. Dionysus represents unbridled freedom and excess while on the other end of the spectrum, Pentheus epitomizes excessive law, order and rigidity. As society slides into fear and tribalism, its citizen’s rationale becomes clouded as they blindly take orders and pick sides rather than seek moderation and rationality. CTH’s interpretation is a lush and modern version of the classic Greek tragedy that tackles the ills of a culture obsessed with celebrity worship, social media and fear of the other, causing people to lose the ability to see the truth — that people in power are fallible…until it’s far too late. A New Version by Bryan Doerries. Directed by Carl Cofield. Choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Thursdays - Sundays, July 11-28, 2019
