Performance | The Global Warming Dunking Booth: An Interactive Performance/Installation

The Global Warming Dunking Booth is an interactive performance/installation by Lori Brungard consisting of a custom built, snow globe-like dunking booth, wherein the Statue of Liberty is re-incarnated as a cabaret performer, awaiting her fate. Hilariously highlighting the effects of our actions on global warming, she tries to avoid a dunking. Audience members are invited to join in a game of bingo. The numbers they draw signify activities that affect global warming and sea levels, positively and negatively, and trigger responses affecting the water surrounding her. As participants' actions affect her level of inundation Lady Liberty interacts with them, heckling and cajoling in her French accent, invoking the images of the freedom that she is meant to represent. Thus, individual consumer freedoms are juxtaposed with their impact on the community as a whole, and visitors' experiential participation will result in immediate and visceral

Opening Reception | Bernard Kirschenbaum: Self Portrait

A set of thirteen progressive geometric shapes (triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon and so on) separated and spread around the gallery space, Self Portrait is the largest single work the gallery has ever shown. Self Portrait is deceptively simple: a seemingly symmetrical, circular work, suggesting a perfect abstract order, no references, no up or down. Yet under the surface it is also a swirl of shapes, all different, yet ultimately perfectly fitting into each other. The nested vortex they form is reminiscent of the archetypal wormhole pattern appearing often in early computer animations.

Concert | High-Voltage Music Fusing Funk, Brass and Indian Spectacle

Cha Wa’s high voltage music fuses fat funky beats with New Orleans-style brass and Mardi Gras Indian spectacle to the park. Lead singer J’Wan Boudreaux’s gritty vocals are steeped in the Crescent City’s legendary Mardi Gras tradition where African-American men march in Native American dress inspiring a vibrant street music. While Cha Wa honors the tradition with pulse-quickening and foot stomping rhythms, they also add a socially conscious element with songs addressing injustice. You’ll move to their intoxicating groove and imagine yourself part of a jubilant New Orleans second line parade.

Play | Romeo and Juliet: Shakespeare in the Parking Lot

This popular New York summer institution is now in its 25th year. Its concept--presenting Shakespeare plays with a "poor theater" aesthetic in a working parking lot--is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. The Drilling Company, led by Artistic Director Hamilton Clancy, has produced the attraction since 2005. The play exquisitely demonstrates the futility of partisanship, pleading for similar people to stop killing each other for reasons they no longer remember. Director Lukas Raphael will set the play in New York in the early 1990's, with the Montagues and Capulets imagined as families of a Lower East Side neighborhood. In this concept, the Capulets (Juliet's people) are long standing stewards of the neighborhood. Romeo's Montagues, on the other hand, are upwardly mobile, eager to rise above it. Concert | Jeff Tweedy, Grammy-Winning Frontman for Wilco

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and his introspective lyrics have come to represent the simple truths of American life in all its soulful, insecure glory. A prolific songwriter, guitarist, and producer, Tweedy has enjoyed a storied career that earned him a Grammy for Wilco's A Ghost Is Born. The poetic rocker--deemed "equal parts Walt Whitman and Richard Brautigan" by Spin--is now stepping into the solo spotlight after embarking on an exceptionally creative year. He released Warmer, the companion LP to his acclaimed 2018 solo album, this April to rave reviews, and published an illuminating best-selling memoir Let's Go (So We Can Get Back) in late 2018. Opening the evening is jazz-based cellist, singer, composer, and improviser Helen Gillet who fabricates each song with a true mastery of live looping technology. From avant-garde jazz and French chansons to funk, alternative rock, and the bohemian flair of the Velvet Underground, she "plays every note on fire" (Medium.com). Simultaneously enigmatic and virtuosic, profound yet lighthearted, Gillet's performances overflow with a sense of drama and whimsy.

Play | The Bacchae: The Classical Theatre of Harlem Presents Euripides’ Classic Tragedy

Set in the modern era, Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him. The clash between Dionysus, played as a modern-day rock star and his cousin Pentheus, the uncompromising and moralistic king of the city, examines the consequences of a general public that blindly follows two vastly different leaders. Dionysus represents unbridled freedom and excess while on the other end of the spectrum, Pentheus epitomizes excessive law, order and rigidity. As society slides into fear and tribalism, its citizen’s rationale becomes clouded as they blindly take orders and pick sides rather than seek moderation and rationality. CTH’s interpretation is a lush and modern version of the classic Greek tragedy that tackles the ills of a culture obsessed with celebrity worship, social media and fear of the other, causing people to lose the ability to see the truth — that people in power are fallible…until it’s far too late.
