Video | Cynthia Maughan: Daylong Tribute Screening

A tribute to Cynthia Maughan (1949-2019): a daylong screening of video works by the under-sung artist who produced hundreds of darkly humorous, feminist direct-camera performance tapes. Beginning with her master's thesis at Cal State Long Beach, Maughan made more than 300 videos between 1973 and 1980. Riffing on the short form, deadpan style of her contemporary William Wegman, and made with one of his hand-me-down cameras, Maughan's tapes draw inspiration from sources like true-crime magazines, gothic literature, B-movies, and pop music to create faux-confessional mini-narratives and understated performances on themes of femininity, the body, violence, and death. Earnest and ironic in near-equal measure, her wry, frequently macabre work has close affinities with many of her Southern California contemporaries such as Paul McCarthy, Martha Rosler, Nina Sobell, and Eleanor Antin, all of whom she was featured alongside in David Ross's landmark 1975 Southland Video Anthology. After a short but extremely prolific period, Maughan essentially ceased making video works and withdrew from the art scene. Her inclusion in the Getty Center's equally landmark 2008 exhibition California Video, curated by Glenn Phillips, reintroduced her work to a generation that was ready to recognize the prescience of her self-directed camera personas and identity shifts.

Gallery Talk | Made in New York City: The Business of Folk Art: Exhibition Tour

Folk art has flourished in the heart of New York City since the eighteenth century, contrary to popular belief that it was a rural genre that reflected local tastes, traditions, and needs. Around 100 works of art by self-taught artists tell the story about New York City as the center of America’s financial and commercial world from two perspectives simultaneously: “The Art of Business” portrays the people and places that were part of the city’s thrumming commercial life, and “The Business of Art” highlights the diverse mediums and formats used by the artists, artisans, and manufacturers. This tour of the exhibition is conducted by museum gallery guides.

Party | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of 'afternoon tea' first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Opening Reception | Stellar: New Paintings

From the artist, Bobby Hill: "Stellar is a story of getting back to the basics in order to move forward and rediscover who I am as a visual artist. To me, this meant using my life as the subject matter. Taking more time than usual to create each piece and being very deliberate with the composition. Painting with the brush rather than drawing with the brush. Scraping away layers of paint and collage materials that's been building up on each found wooden panel over the last ten plus years. Although I'm known for my mixed media screenprints, creatively I believe there are other levels to ascend to."

A mystery linking Manhattan circa 1991 to eastern Afghanistan in 2012, Blue Hours tells of a life-changing friendship between two memorable heroines. Movie in a Park | Coco (2017): Film and Concert Outdoors

Named for the patron saint of music, effervescent Latin fusion band La Santa Cecilia is fronted by the charismatic Marisol Hernandez (a.k.a. La Marisoul), who “sings like the love child of Janis Joplin and Celia Cruz” (Los Angeles Times). She’s joined by accordionist and requintero José “Pepe” Carlos, bass player Alex Bendaña and percussionist Miguel “Oso” Ramirez. Seamlessly integrating cumbia, bossa nova, rumba, bolero, tango, jazz, rock, klezmer, and any other musical genre that crosses their path, the Grammy-winning band’s smart songs are vibrant reflections of Los Angeles’s intriguing tapestry of cultures. Following the performance will be a screening of Disney/Pixar’s Coco. Called “a definitive movie for this moment” by The New Yorker and inspired by el Día de los Muertos, this tale of family, fun, and adventure centers on a young musician named Miguel who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead. While on this extraordinary journey, he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living and to reverse his family’s ban on music.

Play | Romeo and Juliet: Shakespeare in the Parking Lot

This popular New York summer institution is now in its 25th year. Its concept--presenting Shakespeare plays with a "poor theater" aesthetic in a working parking lot--is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. The Drilling Company, led by Artistic Director Hamilton Clancy, has produced the attraction since 2005. The play exquisitely demonstrates the futility of partisanship, pleading for similar people to stop killing each other for reasons they no longer remember. Director Lukas Raphael will set the play in New York in the early 1990's, with the Montagues and Capulets imagined as families of a Lower East Side neighborhood. In this concept, the Capulets (Juliet's people) are long standing stewards of the neighborhood. Romeo's Montagues, on the other hand, are upwardly mobile, eager to rise above it. Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: (decrypted) micro-myths

A solo exhibition of installation, drawing, and mixed media works by New York-based artist Joseph Burwell. Burwell's multi-faceted presentations combine precise architectural elements with two-dimensional renderings, signs, and objects, displayed throughout the fragmented space in unconventional ways. There is no single ideal vantage point, but rather, we gain clues to the undercurrents of the work by circling its sculptural elements or peering through cut-outs that frame an opposite setting. The artist's background in architecture echoes in his dexterous use of industrial materials and sharply rendered interiors, and while the work proposes settings that could be inhabited, those settings are also seemingly illogical, populated by objects that take the place of human characters.

Dance Performance | Sensation 1/This Interior: A Work for Six Dancers

Ligia Lewis works as a choreographer and dancer. Her affectively charged choreographies move across the fields of dance, theater, and visual art. Troubling the stage and the body as sites of stable representation, Lewis unsettles their edges by inviting frictions and ruptures into her creative process. Lewis expands her solo work Sensation 1 into an hour-long performance for six dancers. The figure of a vocalist who holds her concluding note forms the basis for Sensation 1/This Interior. Lewis stretches this climatic moment into a sustained articulation of feeling and affect across multiple bodies. An ecstatic choreographed form emerges, dissolving the singular gesture of the iconic pop diva into a collective experience.

Concert | Indie Rock And Pop From Toronto And London

Broken Social Scene, the legendary experimental collective at the heart of the Toronto indie rock ecosystem that gave us Feist, Stars, and Metric among others, is “a band that once sounded like everything else and nothing else.” (Pitchfork) Founded by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning and a cohort of like-minded musicians in 1999, they’ve pushed the envelope for two decades and evolved into post-rock royalty. They remain one of the most joyous live bands you will ever see. The London born and raised prodigy Nilüfer Yanya, still in her early 20s, is one of the most exciting and unusual artists to arrive in the pop world this decade. After three EPs, the first released while she was a teenager, she dropped her first album Miss Universe in 2019 and critics have been lining up to put it on their best-of-the-year lists. Pitchfork gave it an astonishing 8.3, noting that “the rapturous debut from the British singer-songwriter takes adventurous pop-rock crucibles to new heights with her illusory songwriting and stunning voice.” Stereogum called her voice "malleable and endlessly expressive." Paste gushed, “with an album that borders on soul, pop, jazz, and rock, Yanya is far too preoccupied with her inner demons and unique artistry to quibble over what one particular genre her music most closely resembles.”

Play | The Bacchae: The Classical Theatre of Harlem Presents Euripides’ Classic Tragedy

Set in the modern era, Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him. The clash between Dionysus, played as a modern-day rock star and his cousin Pentheus, the uncompromising and moralistic king of the city, examines the consequences of a general public that blindly follows two vastly different leaders. Dionysus represents unbridled freedom and excess while on the other end of the spectrum, Pentheus epitomizes excessive law, order and rigidity. As society slides into fear and tribalism, its citizen’s rationale becomes clouded as they blindly take orders and pick sides rather than seek moderation and rationality. CTH’s interpretation is a lush and modern version of the classic Greek tragedy that tackles the ills of a culture obsessed with celebrity worship, social media and fear of the other, causing people to lose the ability to see the truth — that people in power are fallible…until it’s far too late. A New Version by Bryan Doerries. Directed by Carl Cofield. Choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Thursdays - Sundays, July 11-28, 2019
