Author Reading | Callous Objects: Designs Against the Homeless

Robert Rosenberger's book unearths cases in which cities push homeless people out of public spaces through a combination of policy and strategic design. Rosenberger examines such commonplace devices as garbage cans, fences, signage, and benches—all of which reveal political agendas beneath the surface. Such objects have evolved, through a confluence of design and law, to be open to some uses and closed to others, but always capable of participating in collective ends on a large scale. Rosenberger brings together ideas from the philosophy of technology, social theory, and feminist epistemology to spotlight the widespread anti-homeless ideology built into our communities and enacted in law.

Play | Romeo and Juliet: Shakespeare in the Parking Lot

This popular New York summer institution is now in its 25th year. Its concept--presenting Shakespeare plays with a "poor theater" aesthetic in a working parking lot--is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. The Drilling Company, led by Artistic Director Hamilton Clancy, has produced the attraction since 2005. The play exquisitely demonstrates the futility of partisanship, pleading for similar people to stop killing each other for reasons they no longer remember. Director Lukas Raphael will set the play in New York in the early 1990's, with the Montagues and Capulets imagined as families of a Lower East Side neighborhood. In this concept, the Capulets (Juliet's people) are long standing stewards of the neighborhood. Romeo's Montagues, on the other hand, are upwardly mobile, eager to rise above it. Concert | African Music By Well-Known Musicians

Last year's outstanding Un Autre Blanc, which featured everyone from Angelique Kidjo to Alpha Blondy and was announced as his final record, reaffirmed Salif Keita as "the most adventurous, gloriously soulful male singer-songwriter in Africa" (Guardian UK). Known as "the Golden Voice of Africa," Keita was ostracized as a child for his albinism and rejected by his family for pursuing music. He found early success as a member of two iconic bands, the Rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs, before moving to Paris and launching a high-profile solo career in the mid-'80s. Now celebrating his 70th year on the planet, he returns to Brooklyn for his first time back at the Bandshell in more than a decade as a living legend of world music. The djembe and conga virtuoso Courtnee Roze is a bandleader, producer, lyricist, writer, and percussionist whose catalogue of collaborators includes Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Cirque du Soleil, J. Cole, and Lachanze. She has performed on storied stages both grand and intimate, from Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater to Joe's Pub and National Sawdust, and she won the Afropunk's 2017 Brooklyn Battle of the Bands.

Play | The Bacchae: The Classical Theatre of Harlem Presents Euripides’ Classic Tragedy

Set in the modern era, Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him. The clash between Dionysus, played as a modern-day rock star and his cousin Pentheus, the uncompromising and moralistic king of the city, examines the consequences of a general public that blindly follows two vastly different leaders. Dionysus represents unbridled freedom and excess while on the other end of the spectrum, Pentheus epitomizes excessive law, order and rigidity. As society slides into fear and tribalism, its citizen’s rationale becomes clouded as they blindly take orders and pick sides rather than seek moderation and rationality. CTH’s interpretation is a lush and modern version of the classic Greek tragedy that tackles the ills of a culture obsessed with celebrity worship, social media and fear of the other, causing people to lose the ability to see the truth — that people in power are fallible…until it’s far too late. A New Version by Bryan Doerries. Directed by Carl Cofield. Choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Thursdays - Sundays, July 11-28, 2019
