Book Club | On Murder: Considered as One of the Fine Arts

In this dispassionate analysis of the act of murder, Thomas De Quincey’s innovative, idiosyncratic artistic vision found space for gruesome reportage, satire, literary criticism, and aesthetic judgments, in a work strewn with examples ranging from antiquity to his own time, including the urban serial-killer John Williams. In addition to this essay’s Swiftian exercise in irony, he investigated the Williams case further in a postscript, resulting in a dramatic suspense-filled narrative that prefigures Capote’s In Cold Blood and the modern true-crime genre.

Party | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of 'afternoon tea' first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Movie in a Park | Liza with a Z: Film and Dance Performances (Outdoors)

Liza Minnelli fans young and old are invited to gather under the stars for a rare screening of the Emmy- and Peabody Award–winning Liza with a Z. Capturing a one-woman, one-night-only production Minnelli gave at the Lyceum Theater in 1972, and along with it a momentous time in cultural history, this concert film boasted superstar credits (directed by Bob Fosse, costumed by Halston, and packed with songs by Kander & Ebb). Following in the footsteps of choreographic legend Alvin Ailey, Caleb Teicher believes that dance is for everybody—and every body. The jazz, tap, and swing wunderkind has developed a style of dance that reflects not only how Americans have danced for the last hundred years, but also how they use their bodies now. Along with his intrepid ensemble, the Bessie Award–winner presents a program that includes the spirited Lindy hop–inspired Meet Ella, set to the music of Ella Fitzgerald; Small & Tall, witty, jazz-inflected duets performed to live music; and Bzzz, featuring rousing tap choreography and the irresistible rhythms of an onstage beatboxer. Rounding out this exhilarating evening of dance is a performance of “Sing, Sing, Sing” from Bob Fosse's Dancin', by students of LaGuardia High School, with original choreography by Fosse.

Concert | A Fusion of Ancestral Chilean Rhythms and Jazz

Ernesto Holman, one of Chile’s most renowned bass players and a member of the indigenous Mapuche community, has been an integral part of the rock scene for the past 40 years. A dedicated ambassador of the bass, Holman has changed the musical landscape by elevating the instrument beyond the rhythm section and recasting it as a melodic necessity. With Josué Villalobos on drums and Gustavo Cerqueiras on piano, the Holman Trio offers a unique musical fusion of ancestral Chilean rhythms, cueca, and traditional jazz techniques. They bring their award-winning “Etnojazz” sound to the Atrium on the eve of the release of their new album, Árbol.
