Classical Music | Bach at Noon

The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term 'baroque' has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was 'maestro di capella' at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today's music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi's advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 11, 2018 to May 22, 2019.

Author Reading | The Fall of Wisconsin: The Conservative Conquest of a Progressive Bastion and the Future of American Politics

For over a century Wisconsin had been known for its progressive ideas and government. But following a Republican sweep of the state’s government in 2010, Wisconsin’s democratic heritage was weakened, and the state swung right for the first time in 30 years in the 2016 presidential election. In The Fall of Wisconsin: The Conservative Conquest of a Progressive Bastion and the Future of American Politics, journalist and former Wisconsinite Dan Kaufman shows how the state’s progressive tradition was usurped. He traces the history that made Wisconsin so widely admired: the work of celebrated politicians, socialists, conservationists, and the state’s Native American tribes. He then demonstrates how Governor Scott Walker's strategy pitted citizens against one another so powerful corporations and wealthy donors could better take control of state government, dismantling laws protecting voting rights, labor unions, the environment, and public education. He then highlights the current efforts of those fighting to reclaim Wisconsin’s progressive legacy against the odds. Kaufman will be joined in conversation by William Finnegan,  staff writer at The New Yorker and author of the memoir Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life.

Claudia, a lonely young woman, works in a supermarket. One night, she ends up in the hospital with a severe case of appendicitis. There, she meets Martha, the woman resting in the bed next to hers. Martha, who lives alone with her four children, gains Claudia's trust. When she gets out of the hospital, she spontaneously offers Claudia to go home with them. Getting to know this family makes Claudia feel at ease. And for the first time she experiences a sense of belonging in this peculiar little tribe. Director: Claudia Sainte-Luce 89 min.

Play | The Bacchae: The Classical Theatre of Harlem Presents Euripides’ Classic Tragedy

Set in the modern era, Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him. The clash between Dionysus, played as a modern-day rock star and his cousin Pentheus, the uncompromising and moralistic king of the city, examines the consequences of a general public that blindly follows two vastly different leaders. Dionysus represents unbridled freedom and excess while on the other end of the spectrum, Pentheus epitomizes excessive law, order and rigidity. As society slides into fear and tribalism, its citizen’s rationale becomes clouded as they blindly take orders and pick sides rather than seek moderation and rationality. CTH’s interpretation is a lush and modern version of the classic Greek tragedy that tackles the ills of a culture obsessed with celebrity worship, social media and fear of the other, causing people to lose the ability to see the truth — that people in power are fallible…until it’s far too late. A New Version by Bryan Doerries. Directed by Carl Cofield. Choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Previews: July 6-7 and 9-10, 2019 Regular Performances: Thursdays - Sundays, July 11-28, 2019
