Play | Romeo and Juliet: Shakespeare in the Parking Lot

This popular New York summer institution is now in its 25th year. Its concept--presenting Shakespeare plays with a "poor theater" aesthetic in a working parking lot--is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. The Drilling Company, led by Artistic Director Hamilton Clancy, has produced the attraction since 2005. The play exquisitely demonstrates the futility of partisanship, pleading for similar people to stop killing each other for reasons they no longer remember. Director Lukas Raphael will set the play in New York in the early 1990's, with the Montagues and Capulets imagined as families of a Lower East Side neighborhood. In this concept, the Capulets (Juliet's people) are long standing stewards of the neighborhood. Romeo's Montagues, on the other hand, are upwardly mobile, eager to rise above it. Concert | Latin Grammy Winning And Nominated Musicians Performing Latin Music

Latin Grammy winning Guatemalan singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno and a collection of very special guests dive into the classic Pan American songbook of the 1950s and '60s, playing music from Moreno's forthcoming album Spangled (Fall 2019). She was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2017. Enjambre is a chart-topping Rock en Espanol band with a reverence for classic rock; they cite Creedence, Zeppelin, and early Beatles as influences. They released their first record, Consuelo En Domingo, in 2005 and their most recent, Imperfecto Extrano, in 2017. El David Aguilar, a captivating indie folk artist who mixes influences from across the Latin music world, is "one of the most versatile, creative, and groundbreaking contemporary singer-songwriters to come out of Mexico's independent scene." (SXSW). He was nominated for five Latin GRAMMY Awards last year for his outstanding album Siguiente. The Latin Alternative Music Conference, which is celebrating its 20th year, "is to Latin alternative the way the Sundance Film Festival is to indie movies." (The New York Times).

Play | The Bacchae: The Classical Theatre of Harlem Presents Euripides’ Classic Tragedy

Set in the modern era, Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him. The clash between Dionysus, played as a modern-day rock star and his cousin Pentheus, the uncompromising and moralistic king of the city, examines the consequences of a general public that blindly follows two vastly different leaders. Dionysus represents unbridled freedom and excess while on the other end of the spectrum, Pentheus epitomizes excessive law, order and rigidity. As society slides into fear and tribalism, its citizen’s rationale becomes clouded as they blindly take orders and pick sides rather than seek moderation and rationality. CTH’s interpretation is a lush and modern version of the classic Greek tragedy that tackles the ills of a culture obsessed with celebrity worship, social media and fear of the other, causing people to lose the ability to see the truth — that people in power are fallible…until it’s far too late. A New Version by Bryan Doerries. Directed by Carl Cofield. Choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Thursdays - Sundays, July 11-28, 2019
