Party | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of 'afternoon tea' first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Opening Reception | With Pleasure: Group Show

With Pleasure is an exhibition of new works by the MFA 2019 graduates from the International Center of Photography-Bard College MFA program in Advanced Photographic Studies. The body is a site: of memory and loss, exploration and evidence, trauma and reckoning, fantasy and substance, the public and the private, conflict and reconciliation, of representation and figuration. The body needn’t be always human, or even living. It can be an idea, a fleeting feeling, a crack in the rocks, cool water, the layering of physical and nonphysical selves. How do we engage with these concepts? If the body is the “flesh metaphor of all human experience”1, when does the body transcend its fragmented nature to become a whole: body to heart, heart to whole, whole to community?   With: Samantha Box, Ali Di Luccia, Genevieve Fournier, Avjit Halder, Pippa Hetherington, Eugene Lee, Andrea Martucci, Michael McFadden, Tomo Morisawa, and Lauren Taubenfeld

Play | The Bacchae: The Classical Theatre of Harlem Presents Euripides’ Classic Tragedy

Set in the modern era, Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him. The clash between Dionysus, played as a modern-day rock star and his cousin Pentheus, the uncompromising and moralistic king of the city, examines the consequences of a general public that blindly follows two vastly different leaders. Dionysus represents unbridled freedom and excess while on the other end of the spectrum, Pentheus epitomizes excessive law, order and rigidity. As society slides into fear and tribalism, its citizen’s rationale becomes clouded as they blindly take orders and pick sides rather than seek moderation and rationality. CTH’s interpretation is a lush and modern version of the classic Greek tragedy that tackles the ills of a culture obsessed with celebrity worship, social media and fear of the other, causing people to lose the ability to see the truth — that people in power are fallible…until it’s far too late. A New Version by Bryan Doerries. Directed by Carl Cofield. Choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher. Previews: July 6-7 and 9-10, 2019 Regular Performances: Thursdays - Sundays, July 11-28, 2019
