Film | Ninotchka (1939)

A no-nonsense diplomat of the Soviet Union, Nina Ivanovna "Ninotchka" Yakushova arrives in Paris to ensure the sale of jewels seized during the Russian Revolution. Meanwhile, carefree bachelor Count Leon d'Algout attempts to intercept the valuables on behalf of their former owner, the Grand Duchess Swana. Despite their conflicting allegiances, the icy Ninotchka soon warms to Leon's charms, reluctantly going against her better judgment. Director: Ernst Lubitsch Cast: Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas, Ina Claire Greta Garbo was a Swedish-American actress. Regarded as one of the greatest screen actresses of all time, she was known for her melancholic, somber persona, her film portrayals of tragic characters, and her subtle and understated performances. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Garbo fifth on its list of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema. Garbo launched her career with a secondary role in the 1924 Swedish film The Saga of Gosta Berling. Her performance caught the attention of Louis B. Mayer, chief executive of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), who brought her to Hollywood in 1925. She stirred interest with her first American silent film, Torrent (1926). Garbo's performance in Flesh and the Devil (1927), her third movie, made her an international star. In 1928, Garbo starred in A Woman of Affairs, which catapulted her at MGM to its highest box-office star.

Film | Sommerfilme: 8 Under-the-Radar German Films (online thru Aug 31)

These eight summer films portray the warm season rarely as carefree as it’s supposed to be. Summer, in the popular imagination, is a sun-drenched, fun-filled time spent exploring and dreaming of the possibilities that life holds for us. It’s the days we might spend at the beach, by the lake, or in a too-hot city. Summer is also a time to enjoy cinema, whether it’s in an air-conditioned theater or under the stars. The past decades have brought us summer films we all know and love: iconic blockbusters, tender coming-of-age tales, stories of new beginnings, and feel-good movies to watch over and over again. Films: Thomas Arslan, Bright Nights (2017) Ilker Catak, I Am, I Was, I Will Be (2019) Leonie Krippendorff, Cocoon (2020) Sonja Kröner, The Garden (2017) Johannes Maria Schmitt, Neubau (2021) Tom Sommerlatte, Summers Downstairs (2015) Sven Taddicken, The Most Beautiful Couple (2018) Joya Thome, Queen of Niendorf (2017) All films in German with English subtitles.
