Film | Academy Award Winner A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) with Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando

Based on the play by Tennessee Williams, this renowned drama follows troubled former schoolteacher Blanche DuBois as she leaves small-town Mississippi and moves in with her sister, Stella Kowalski, and her husband, Stanley, in New Orleans. Blanche's flirtatious Southern-belle presence causes problems for Stella and Stanley, who already have a volatile relationship, leading to even greater conflict in the Kowalski household. Director: Elia Kazan Cast: Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, Karl Malden Marlon Brando was considered one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, which spanned six decades, including two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, one Cannes Film Festival Award, and three British Academy Film Awards. Brando is credited with being one of the first actors to bring the Stanislavski system of acting, and method acting, to mainstream audiences. Vivien Leigh was a British actress who won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, for her definitive performances as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939) and Blanche DuBois in the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), a role she had also played on stage in London's West End in 1949. She also won a Tony Award for her work in the Broadway musical version of Tovarich (1963). Although her career had periods of inactivity, in 1999 the American Film Institute ranked Leigh as the 16th-greatest female movie star of classic Hollywood cinema.

Park Walk | Tide Deck Tour

A guided tour of the Tide Deck for a unique river ecology experience. The design for pier is inspired by Manhattan’s natural shoreline prior to European colonization in the 17th century. The pier includes a series of ecological communities representing this native landscape, from a woodland forest to the rocky tidal zone and the Hudson River itself. One of the most unique of these native coastal environments is on the Tide Deck, which is an engineered rocky tidal marsh located on the western end of the pier. The Tide Deck ebbs and floods with our daily tidal cycle and features many interesting habitat enhancements including tide pools. Tours are offered every 30 minutes.

Jazz | Charlie Parker Jazz Festival: Music and Film

A concert featuring musicians who appear in Paris is in Harlem. Philadelphia-born saxophonist Antoine Roney has been a distinctive voice in jazz for over four decades. After studying with Jackie McLean at the Hartt School of Music, he worked with a long line of greats including Clifford Jordan, Donald Byrd, Rashied Ali, Arthur Taylor, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones, and his late brother, Wallace Roney. An accomplished bandleader with several albums to his name, he is also the father of rising jazz star Kojo Roney, who features in this trio. Joining the trio will be alto saxophonist Jordan Young and cult guitar hero Spaceman Patterson. Film: Harlem is in Paris (2022) is a multi-character mosaic set in 2017, on the day that New York City's infamous Cabaret or "No Dancing" Law was repealed after 98 years of institutional racism targeting musicians and business owners of color. It follows several characters through separate but intertwined storylines that converge one winter night during a shooting at a jazz bar in Harlem. This is a film about life and death, structured like the most freewheeling of American art forms: Jazz--ultimately telling the story of a neighborhood, a city and an America that will find a way to dance again. Director: Christina Kallas

Film | Sommerfilme: 8 Under-the-Radar German Films (online thru Aug 31)

These eight summer films portray the warm season rarely as carefree as it’s supposed to be.
