Opening Reception | Elpidofóra Topía (Hopeful Landscapes): Group Show

A group exhibition featuring 12 new works by six artists. It engages with the radical idea of grounded hope in a time when the artists and viewers alike must contend with oppressive political, ecological, and personal truths in everyday life. The exhibition draws its title from the Greek myth of Pandora’s vessel, which, when opened, released all manner of destruction upon humankind, saving and excepting one last object: Elpis, the Greek spirit of hope. The show’s artists consider their own relationships to isolation, anxiety, neurodiversity, chronic illness, and identity to create works that take stock of a realistic future of connection, healing, pleasure, and communal understanding. On view will be three new paintings, two sculptures, two video installations, four mixed media installations and one woodcut print on the central theme of hope. Participating artists: Cody Folta Vanessa Barros-Andrade Veneranda Aguirre Mike Citrola Marysol Galvan-Pelayo Tina Hanae Fernanda Uribe-Horta

Book Discussion | Red Star Over the Pacific: China's Rise and the Challenge to U.S. Maritime Strategy (online)

Combining a close knowledge of Asia and an ability to tap Chinese-language sources with naval combat experience and expertise in sea-power theory, the authors assess how the rise of Chinese sea power will affect U.S. maritime strategy in Asia. They argue that China has laid the groundwork for a sustained challenge to American primacy in maritime Asia, and to defend this hypothesis they look back to Alfred Thayer Mahan's sea-power theories, now popular with the Chinese. Dr. Toshi Yoshihara's book considers how strategic thought about the sea shapes Beijing's deliberations and compares China's geostrategic predicament to that of the Kaiser's Germany a century ago. It examines the Chinese Navy's operational concepts, tactics, and capabilities and appraises China's missile force. The author concludes that China now presents a challenge to America's strategic position of such magnitude that Washington must compete in earnest.

Book Club | The Guest by Emma Cline

Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome. A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her. Propelled by desperation and a mutable sense of morality, she spends the week leading up to Labor Day moving from one place to the next, a cipher leaving destruction in her wake.

Concert | Music on the River: Old-School Reggae

Traditionalists or progressives? Fronted by the charismatic Jamaican-born singer and songwriter Nee Nee Rushie, the seven-piece New York band The Big Takeover plays original music that is rooted in and reverent toward the genres and rhythms of Jamaican pop: reggae, rocksteady, ska. They are devotees of Desmond Dekker and the way the old school did it.  At the same time, The Big Takeover crosses lines and blends traditions like global pop fusionists. Their deceptively complex arrangements and big hooks connect with the spirit of Motown and the uptown sophistication of the 21st century retro soul and R&B revival scene.

Film | Sommerfilme: 8 Under-the-Radar German Films (online thru Aug 31)

These eight summer films portray the warm season rarely as carefree as it’s supposed to be. Summer, in the popular imagination, is a sun-drenched, fun-filled time spent exploring and dreaming of the possibilities that life holds for us. It’s the days we might spend at the beach, by the lake, or in a too-hot city. Summer is also a time to enjoy cinema, whether it’s in an air-conditioned theater or under the stars. The past decades have brought us summer films we all know and love: iconic blockbusters, tender coming-of-age tales, stories of new beginnings, and feel-good movies to watch over and over again. Films: Thomas Arslan, Bright Nights (2017) Ilker Catak, I Am, I Was, I Will Be (2019) Leonie Krippendorff, Cocoon (2020) Sonja Kröner, The Garden (2017) Johannes Maria Schmitt, Neubau (2021) Tom Sommerlatte, Summers Downstairs (2015) Sven Taddicken, The Most Beautiful Couple (2018) Joya Thome, Queen of Niendorf (2017) All films in German with English subtitles.
