Talk | The Future Is Now: Demystifying AI (online)

In a little more than a year, generative AI has reshaped the visual media landscape with far greater significance than the combined effects of nearly every single previous industry related advancement over the past two centuries. And while the questions surrounding its legality and ethics have just now begun making their way through the courts, photographers and studio operations far and wide are already asking questions: What exactly is generative AI? How does it work? Where did platforms like Dall-e, Midjourney and Stability AI get their training data? Is there money to be made in shooting content for training data? Can I leverage and exploit my already existing archive to generate revenue from dataset sales? What subjects are needed for generative AI training data? What if I want to shoot real models? Do I need special legal documents? What’s up with GDPR, BIPA and PII? Who are the vendors we can trust to onboard us into this exciting new world? Mark Milstein, co-founder and rainmaker at vAIsual, a pioneer in AI generated media, will bring attendees up to speed on the state this industry altering tech, and give concrete insights into how to safely navigate the synthetic media tsunami.

Park Walk | Tide Deck Tour

A guided tour of the Tide Deck for a unique river ecology experience. The design for pier is inspired by Manhattan's natural shoreline prior to European colonization in the 17th century. The pier includes a series of ecological communities representing this native landscape, from a woodland forest to the rocky tidal zone and the Hudson River itself. One of the most unique of these native coastal environments is on the Tide Deck, which is an engineered rocky tidal marsh located on the western end of the pier. The Tide Deck ebbs and floods with our daily tidal cycle and features many interesting habitat enhancements including tide pools. Tours are offered every 30 minutes.

Discussion | Origins of Writing in Northeastern Africa

Prof. John Coleman Darnell and Dr. Colleen Darnell will discuss how their archaeological discoveries over the past decade have contributed to the understanding of the writing systems invented in Northeastern Africa. The origins of the hieroglyphic script reach back to between 4000 and 3500 BCE when a shared imagery develops in Upper (southern) Egypt and northern Nubia. The lecture will discuss how rock art and rock inscriptions provide important information about this early iconographic syntax and the invention of hieroglyphs. Currently, Dr. Colleen Darnell is an adjunct professor at the Naugatuck Valley Community College. She has pioneered a highly successful archaeology project in a province of Upper Egypt and penned six books. Dr. John Darnell is currently a professor of Egyptology at Yale University in the Near Eastern Civilizations and Languages Department. He has a breadth of experience as a field epigrapher, and has special interest in cryptography and Ancient Egyptian archaeological remains.

Film | Sommerfilme: 8 Under-the-Radar German Films (online thru Aug 31)

These eight summer films portray the warm season rarely as carefree as it’s supposed to be. Summer, in the popular imagination, is a sun-drenched, fun-filled time spent exploring and dreaming of the possibilities that life holds for us. It’s the days we might spend at the beach, by the lake, or in a too-hot city. Summer is also a time to enjoy cinema, whether it’s in an air-conditioned theater or under the stars. The past decades have brought us summer films we all know and love: iconic blockbusters, tender coming-of-age tales, stories of new beginnings, and feel-good movies to watch over and over again. Films: Thomas Arslan, Bright Nights (2017) Ilker Catak, I Am, I Was, I Will Be (2019) Leonie Krippendorff, Cocoon (2020) Sonja Kröner, The Garden (2017) Johannes Maria Schmitt, Neubau (2021) Tom Sommerlatte, Summers Downstairs (2015) Sven Taddicken, The Most Beautiful Couple (2018) Joya Thome, Queen of Niendorf (2017) All films in German with English subtitles.
