Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Start times: 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm

Tour | Tour the Tall Ship Eagle

Tour the 1936 three-masted barque Eagle, a training vessel for future officers of the United States Coast Guard, when she arrives in New York. Used for annual cadet practice cruises, the ship serves as the site of practical training which supplements engineering and military schooling. A secondary mission is to bring the Coast Guard story to the general public. She served as Host Ship for all Operation Sail parades—1964, 1976, 1986, 1992, 2000, and 2012—and has docked at the Seaport Museum eight times since 1968.  Tour the historic 295-foot vessel with Coast Guard Cadets and Auxiliary members and learn more about the history of the ship and the techniques behind sailing a Tall Ship. No registration needed, just stop by during the open hours.

Book Discussion | Horror Film and Otherness: What the Majority Dreads

What do horror films reveal about social difference in the everyday world? Criticism of the genre often relies on a dichotomy between monstrosity and normality, in which unearthly creatures and deranged killers are metaphors for society's fear of the "others" that threaten the "normal." The monstrous other might represent women, Jews, or Blacks, as well as Indigenous, queer, poor, elderly, or disabled people. The horror film's depiction of such minorities can be sympathetic to their exclusion or complicit in their oppression, but ultimately, these images are understood to stand in for the others that the majority dreads and marginalizes. With author Adam Lowenstein.

Discussion | AI, Art, and You (online)

This presentation by Apeksha Agarwal and Jack Reznicki will explore and explain the new world of producing images with Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. AI is a powerful tool that can help photographers explore new creative possibilities and generate ideas for your work. These generated images can both serve as a starting point for your own photography work, providing you with new and exciting ideas to explore and expand or it can simply produce interesting images that stand on their own. Issues such as the pros and cons of AI imagery will be discussed as well as the issue of copyright and ownership. Come and listen to these two knowledgeable presenters, and come to ask questions, as there are always many questions about what this technology can do and where it’s going.

Film | Wanda (1970): drama

Wanda is a wanderer in a dreary Rust Belt town, drifting from bars to motels, jobs to jobs, and men to men. She's directionless and futureless, an aging beauty seen by men as usable and disposable. She hands over custody of her children because she knows they're better with their father. She eventually tags along with Norman Dennis, a petty criminal on the run. He's desperate, disreputable, and abusive, but Wanda, meekly accepting her fate, still sleeps with him. Director: Barbara Loden Cast: Barbara Loden, Michael Higgins

Performance | Battle Acts Live: The American Idol of Acting

Battle Acts Live is an evening of comedic and dramatic performances, hosted by the manic personalities of the Galinsky Brothers (of the Manhattan Monologue Slam fame), featuring celebs and newbies alike in 2 acts of live performance battle & action. Act 1 - "The Championship Set" features 6 seasoned actors performing a comedic or dramatic 2.5 minute theatrical monologue and are judged by a panel of celebrity and industry experts. The winner of Act 1 is crowned "Battle Acts Champ," returns next month to defend their title, and wins a cash prize. Act 2 - "The 30 Second Set" features up to 15 "unknowns" who battle for glory, in 30 second performances and are scored by a live audience, where you decide who wins. The winner of Act 2 has now earned the right to perform with the big dogs, in Act 1 in next month's show. Scoring - Actors are scored on three criteria: Professionalism (technical prowess), Emotional Content (do they move the audience), and Battle Guts (courage and bravada). Battle Acts Live offers the rare opportunity for performers of all genres, to showcase their dramatic and comedic chops in front of a packed house, directly in front of professional agents, casting directors, and producers. Everyone is battling for prizes but most importantly, they battle for bragging rights as the best actor in town. Doors open at 7:00 pm.
