Book Club | The Guest by Emma Cline

Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome. A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her. Propelled by desperation and a mutable sense of morality, she spends the week leading up to Labor Day moving from one place to the next, a cipher leaving destruction in her wake.

Jazz | Renowned Trombonist anf Gifted Sonic Shaman in a Harlem Park

Craig Harris is a trombonist, composer, bandleader, and gifted sonic shaman. Seeking an inspired career, he skillfully navigated his musical journey that began when touring with the inimitable Sun Ra, onto a path affirming Harris’s place in performance with and among the ranks of creative music’s most progressive thought leaders. With a repertoire of various-sized ensembles, including Nation of Imagination, Tailgater’s Tales and Harlem Nightsongs, Harris has amassed an extensive discography of his own recorded work in addition to contributing to the musical projects of his many esteemed colleagues. Steeped in the tradition of using art as cultural facilitation to promote change, Harris has flexed his musical voice to comment on social injustice and humanity with influential original works including God’s Trombones, based on James Weldon Johnson’s book of sermons; Souls Within the Veil, commemorating the 100th anniversary of W.E.B. DuBois’s seminal work; TriHarlenium, a sound portrait and 30-year musical time capsule of Harlem; Brown Butterfly, a tribute to the exquisite movements of Muhammad Ali; and BREATHE, a sonic statement in response to the long term and current injustices inflicted upon African American people.

Film | Sommerfilme: 8 Under-the-Radar German Films (online thru Aug 31)

These eight summer films portray the warm season rarely as carefree as it’s supposed to be. Summer, in the popular imagination, is a sun-drenched, fun-filled time spent exploring and dreaming of the possibilities that life holds for us. It’s the days we might spend at the beach, by the lake, or in a too-hot city. Summer is also a time to enjoy cinema, whether it’s in an air-conditioned theater or under the stars. The past decades have brought us summer films we all know and love: iconic blockbusters, tender coming-of-age tales, stories of new beginnings, and feel-good movies to watch over and over again. Films: Thomas Arslan, Bright Nights (2017) Ilker Catak, I Am, I Was, I Will Be (2019) Leonie Krippendorff, Cocoon (2020) Sonja Kröner, The Garden (2017) Johannes Maria Schmitt, Neubau (2021) Tom Sommerlatte, Summers Downstairs (2015) Sven Taddicken, The Most Beautiful Couple (2018) Joya Thome, Queen of Niendorf (2017) All films in German with English subtitles.

Concert | Indie-Rock Music with Melody-Rich Folk Songs (In a Park)

Known for her intimate, confessional-like lyricism, Indigo De Souza isn’t afraid to confront themes of grief and impermanence in her music. Her transparency of spirit invites warmth and familiarity, pulling the audience into her world. Opening the night is Boston-based trio Vundabar, whose melody-rich blend of folk and indie surf-tinged music will be sure to captivate your senses. About the Artists Known for her intimate, confessional-like lyricism, indie rock singer-songwriter Indigo De Souza isn’t afraid to confront themes of grief and impermanence in her music. Hew newest album All of This Will End boasts songs that run the gamut of human emotion. There's pain and sadness, sure, but there's a triumphant spirit of resilience throughout. There's somewhat of a paradox inherent in Vundabar's songwriting – a conflicting sense of nostalgia contrasted with the realization that they couldn't sound more current. The music they make feels like something that should have been heard a long time ago, while simultaneously continuing to forge ahead sonically. Vundabar's high energy live show is the stand out quality of this band and is an art they've undoubtedly perfected by touring non-stop around the country. Vundabar's shows never fail to be captivating, complete with infectious jams, guitar moves galore, intricate drum work, and humorous stage banter to top it all off, the band has become known for putting on an entertaining show. Doors open 6:30 pm.

Concert | Mexican Musical Multi-Hyphenate Joined by Broadway Friends

Lozano, both the evening's conductor and creator, is joined on stage as usual by his Familia, an all-star Latine lineup of Broadway and Off-Broadway performers: Krystina Alabado (Mean Girls), Mayelah Barrera (El Otro Oz), Florencia Cuenca (Desaparecidas), Matías De La Flor (Camelot), Robi Hager (Spring Awakening), Mauricio Martínez (On Your Feet!), Shereen Pimentel (West Side Story), and Marina Pires (ON Your Feet!).
