Darius Rucker first gained fame as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of rock band Hootie & the Blowfish, which he founded in 1986. Poetry Reading | Poetry on the Island


An original poetry performance by Fountain House Gallery artist Aracelis Rivera. Born on a US Army ship docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Aracelis Rivera holds a BA in Art from Lehman College and has studied and exhibited at the Art Students League. She was drawn to the easel while in elementary school and began painting in tempera. Her preferred mediums are oil and acrylic, and she also works in pencil, ink, watercolor, and ceramic. Aracelis particularly admires the works of Goya, Monet, and Rembrandt. She often portrays figures and landscapes in her pieces and has also discovered that working in the abstract style enables her to identify and express her deepest feelings.

In an abridged restaging of Langston In Harlem, the poet Langston Hughes takes you on a journey back through his life, using his own words in poetry and song to depict his struggles as a black artist and as a black man. Through music, dance, visuals, and spoken word, this theatre piece strives to capture the poet's essence. Written by Walter Marks, directed by Carl Cofield. The Classical Theatre of Harlem creates theatre that entertains diverse audiences who desire to be highly engaged emotionally and highly satisfied intellectually by productions anchored in the context of the African Diaspora. Their mission is to maintain a professional theatre company dedicated to returning the classics to the stages of Harlem; to create employment and educational outreach opportunities in the theatre arts; to create and nurture a new, young, and culturally diverse audience for the classics; and to heighten the awareness of theatre and of great art in Harlem.
