Symposium | China & Spain, 1936-39: Robert Capa and the Global Popular Front

A day-long symposium will explore the interconnections between the Spanish Civil War and the concurrent Chinese war of resistance against invading Japanese forces. A focal point will be the photographs of Robert Capa, who won early fame for his dramatic battlefield images in Spain in 1936-37. It is less well known that Capa spent much of 1938 covering the fighting in central China, during a period that witnessed surprising cooperation between Chiang Kai-Shek's Guomindang (Nationalist) forces and their Communist rivals. Based in Wuhan, which had become the Nationalist capital after the Japanese conquest of Nanjing in December 1937, Capa was part of an extensive international contingent of writers, reporters, photojournalists, and filmmakers that included W.H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, Joris Ivens, and Agnes Smedley.

Screening | Joris Ivens' Documentary The 400 Million (1938)

The Japanese agression against China in 1937 forced the Chinese communists to join Chiang Kai-shek's Kwomintang to take up the battle against their common ennemy. In 1938 Joris Ivens and John Ferno went to China, later joined by Robert Capa, to film the battle of T'aiertshwang; one of the few combats won by the Chinese. The film shows all aspects of a war: the battle itself, the preparations, refugees, casualties and victims, the fear and distress, the human misery and the courage, and the land under fire.

Concert | Cuban Hip-Hop with Telmary Diaz

Hip-hop artist Telmary Diaz—a “Cuban rhyming revolution” (NPR)—edges Cuban music away from son, salsa, and Buena Vista Social Club and confidently into the global realm. At once a rapper, activist, and poet, Diaz embraces her Cuban musical heritage as well as hip-hop’s cosmopolitan future, dispensing crisp Spanish rhymes over busy bell patterns and timbales, nu-jazz guitar changes, and the peaks of reggae beats. The result is a syncretic sound infused with history—and guaranteed to secure Diaz as an undisputed leader of Cuba’s hip-hop revolution.
