Concert | Listening to Roots and Voicing Branches: Transnational Freedom Songs of the Black Atlantic

A multimedia performance piece that attempts to redress intraracial tensions in the African diaspora through the sonic and visual presentation of the black Atlantic’s cultural memory. Written by African vocalist Somi and African-American vocalist Chanda Rule, this piece introduces new modes of listening to Black histories. By using jazz as the foundation of their musical conversation, it strives to carve out a new space of cultural belonging and exchange, while the artists weave between song, (dis)harmony, and spoken word, creating acoustically and electronically layered textures of rhythm, movement, textuality, and sound. Opening Reception | Painting: Giuseppe Gonella's Suspended Oscillation

While Gonella's work has been described as capturing a still moment in time while it is contemplating its own destiny, critic Carlo Sala also states, "The compositions of Giuseppe Gonella are done by visual elements with a balance between daily moods and lyrical evocations of fact. The artist is part of a group of Italian painters that follow and respect the awareness of artistic traditions. They are capable of highlighting innovation points on canvas and sharing the charm of the present time we are experiencing. An apparent chaos brings us fragments of images of the personal memory of the artist. We perceive those images as an emotional value evoking freedom."

Opening Reception | Painting: Mary Hrbacek's Entwined

Mary Hrbacek follows the success of her 2009 solo show with a new exhibition of paintings, curated by Richard Pasquarelli. Immersed in the observation of anthropomorphic trees, Hrbacek creates works that may seem unfamiliar, odd or unusual as she strips away external appearances revealing an eternal vision of tree figures, some on the verge of becoming - others transforming - into recognizable figural forms. Hrbacek's work has been exhibited for more than 20 years at galleries and museums in New York City, across the United States and in Europe and Asia. Notable museum shows include those at The National Academy of Design and a 2005 exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum curated by Sara Nightingale.

Opening Reception | Photos: from 1970s to today!

This gallery has come a long way since it was established in 1971 by a dedicated group of New York Times photographers. They believed there was a real need for a cooperative where serious photographers could exhibit their work, exchange ideas and grow as artists. Forty years later, the gallery is thriving. It has more than 110 members and presents new exhibitions eleven times a year, including four juried competitions that draw entries from across the U.S. and overseas. This April, the gallery is presenting a month-long exhibition in recognition of its founding members' vision and the current membership's dedication. The 40th anniversary celebration includes founding members' photographs from the 1970s. In addition, 30 long-time gallery members will show two images each from either the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s.

Lecture | The Dictatorial Perpendicular: Walter Benjamin’s Reading Revolution

Tim Carmody will discuss reading as a three-dimensional activity, not just something that happens on flat surfaces--pages, walls, cards, signs, screens--but rather on surfaces that are always moving through space in relation to human eyes and bodies, other reading or writing surfaces, or still other media devices. Carmody will also discuss the history of media with a focus on reading and writing across different media forms and point to how new experiments in user interfaces both draw on and confound those expectations. Tim Carmody has a PhD in Comparative Literature & Literary Theory from the University of Pennsylvania and has written for Wired.com, The Atlantic, Kottke.org, MIT Technology Review, Nieman Journalism Lab and HiLobrow.

Reading | On Blind Willie McTell, Blues Great: an autobiographical chronicle of a personal catastrophe expressed lyrically

Ralph Ellison once described the blues as "an autobiographical chronicle of a personal catastrophe expressed lyrically." Michael Gray's most recent work, Hand Me My Travelin’ Shoes: In Search of Blind Willie McTell, was shortlisted for the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Biography; his book The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia won the C.B. Oldman Prize for an outstanding work of scholarship and research. Gray’s other books include Song & Dance Man III: The Art of Bob Dylan and Mother: The Frank Zappa Story. Moderated by Robert Polito.

Discussion | Performance artist Karen Finley discusses her memoir The Reality Shows

The Reality Shows collects a decade’s worth of performance pieces by internationally renowned artist and cultural provocateur Karen Finley. One of the hallmarks of Finley’s work—and nowhere more urgently showcased than in this new collection—is the way she uses multiple aesthetic forms in order to disturb settled emotional and political responses to both individual and collective trauma. To mark the publication of The Reality Shows, Finley sits down for a wide-ranging conversation with performance studies scholar Ann Pellegrini to discuss ongoing currents in Finley’s artistic practice and the work of performance art in an age of virtual reality.
