Lecture | Recovering the Right to Family and the Aesthetics of Kin in Emergent U.S. Literatures

This talk will consider how prose fiction by Asian American and U.S. Latina authors lay claim to the internationally recognized "right to family" by developing what Professor Crystal Parikh calls "an aesthetics of kin." Guided by feminist and queer of color critique, she will describe how this fiction reimagines family in order to also locate, in the right to family, an alternative source for the “right to have rights” that citizenship is meant to secure.

Opening Reception | Paintings by Eli Ping

A bold, dynamic interplay between texture and color, Eli Ping's work transgresses the constraints of formal and material convention. Ping borrows liberally from the expressive, gestural realm of painting while exploring the tactile and three-dimensional possibilities of sculpture. Ping's twisted canvas pieces lend insight into the involved, multi-faceted nature of his process, where repeated layering, gouging and molding are the collaborative push and pull between artist and material, creating forms that are as complex as they are beautiful. The considered actions and gestures Ping performs on his materials are countered by the unpredictable effects of weight and gravity. In each work, the limits of materiality are expounded upon, boundaries are pushed. Ping's is a work which explores a precarious and unique balance between intention and chance.

Join historian Warren Shaw for a talk on the next major step in the evolution of American Pop Culture. The cultural and political legacy of the Five Points was modernized and blown up to industrial scale by millions upon millions of new immigrants from Eastern Europe. Political and class boundaries were pushed aside by this tidal wave of Jewish refugees who, from their stronghold on the Lower East Side, established the beginnings of the modern labor movement, legitimized the idea of public health reform, and seized the cultural stage with powerful new works that built on the forms and archetypes of their predecessors.
