Author Reading | Contributors discuss the book Religion and International Relations Theory

Join editor Jack Snyder and volume contributors Courtney Bender and Elizabeth Shakman Hurd. Michael Doyle will offer comments on the book's relevance and contributions to the field. Religious concerns stand at the center of international politics, yet key paradigms in international relations, namely realism, liberalism, and constructivism, barely consider religion in their analysis of political subjects. The essays in this collection rectify this. Authored by leading scholars, they introduce models that integrate religion into the study of international politics and connect religion to a rising form of populist politics in the developing world. Contributors identify religion as pervasive and distinctive, forcing a reframing of international relations theory that reinterprets traditional paradigms.

Lecture | The Implications of the Failure of Congress to Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Congress has failed twice in the past four years to pass any meaningful immigration reform, pushing over 11 million undocumented immigrants and their families deeper into the shadows of our communities. The resulting void has provoked a slew of hostile proposals on a federal and local level that threaten immigrant workers and their children. These over-reaching policies generate collateral damage to immigrants here legally, the citizen children of immigrant parents and people of color generally. Karen Narasaki, the President of the Asian American Justice Center and Vice Chair of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, will talk about both positive and adverse policies being proposed in Washington and around the country; what is at stake for those who are working to improve the social welfare of these communities; and what those concerned about civil and human rights can do.

Explore how and why so many millions have come to the U.S. and what challenges this tradition has posed to national identity, tolerance, and democracy. We'll examine the major immigrant groups (Irish, German, Chinese, Italian, and Jewish) who arrived in this period, the vibrant ethnic enclaves they established (i.e., Little Italy, Little Germany), the struggles they endured to earn a living, and the contributions they made to the city. This talk addresses many aspects of the immigrant experience, including tenement life, labor and the labor movement, and nativism. Dr. Edward T. O’Donnell is a professional historian, author, and speaker. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA and his Ph.D. in American History from Columbia University. Opening Reception | New Go(o)ds 10, an Exhibtion on Czech Student Design

The Czech National Awards for Student Design was first announced by the Czech Design Cabinet in the year 2008. It continued from competitions organized by the Design Centre of the Czech Republic from 1991 to 2007. Originally it was a competition of professional designers, however students have also participated with their school works from the very beginning and they were assessed in a separate category. As the amount of participating students rose each year, and with the growing number of high schools and universities training their students in design, a separate student competition, entitled Student Design, was established in 2004. Young designers from all kinds of schools competed for Student Design prize consisting of three awards: Czech National Award for Student Design, Excellent Student Design and Outstanding Student Design.

Screening | Bull’s Eye: A Painter on the Watch (2010), a Documentary on Artist Marc Séguin

Marc Séguin was the subject of the 2010 documentary film by Bruno Boulianne. Highly metaphorical, the film offers a rare glimpse into the world of an artist who paints like he hunts: with patience, faith, and passion. Between Montréal and New York, Séguin balances the desire to live, create, and spend time in the vast wilderness in order to reach his target: a breathtaking image on canvas. Winning the ARTV Springboard to the World Award at the 2010 Montreal International Festival of Films on Art, the film was also featured at many important venues including the Tate Modern in London, and the Musée du Louvre and Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Author Reading | Joy Gordon reads from her book Invisible War The United States and the Iraq Sanctions

The economic sanctions imposed on Iraq from 1990 to 2003 were the most comprehensive and devastating of any established in the name of international governance. The sanctions, coupled with the bombing campaign of 1991, brought about the near collapse of Iraq's infrastructure and profoundly compromised basic conditions necessary to sustain life. In a sharp indictment of U.S. policy, Joy Gordon examines the key role the nation played in shaping the sanctions, whose harsh strictures resulted in part from U.S. definitions of "dual use" and "weapons of mass destruction," and claims that everything from water pipes to laundry detergent to child vaccines could produce weapons. Drawing on internal UN documents, confidential minutes of closed meetings, and interviews with foreign diplomats and U.S. officials, Gordon details how the United States not only prevented critical humanitarian goods from entering Iraq but also undermined attempts at reform; unilaterally overrode the UN weapons inspectors; and manipulated votes in the Security Council. In every political, legal, and bureaucratic domain, the deliberate policies of the United States ensured the continuation of Iraq's catastrophic condition. Provocative and sure to stir debate, this book lays bare the damage that can be done by unchecked power in our institutions of international governance. Foreign Policy listed it as one of the best books published on the Middle East in 2010.
