Lecture | Representations of World War I in Latin America: A Comparative Study Between Argentina and Brazil

Unknown in 20th Century Latin American historiography, World War I had a fundamental role in rupturing existing Latin American identity in the first three decades of that century. This presentation will use a comparative approach to understand national specificities as well as the relationships between both countries. Its objective will be to reevaluate the period of 1914-1918 in Latin America, analyze the mutations that emerge in representations of Europe after 1914 and show how the war and its consequences contributed to building a political and cultural nationalism in Argentina as well as in Brazil.

Discussion | Metamorphoses: Clothing in Motion from Early Cinema to Contemporary Fashion Film

This seminar will look at clothing and adornment in film as a device of pleasure and sartorial knowledge that has had a long history in shaping cinema’s aesthetic languages. It will articulate some of the connections between early, experimental and underground cinema, as well as the contemporary “fashion film” and more, asking questions about stillness and motion, the material specificities of clothing on the screen, and the contexts (technological and other) of their production and dissemination that allowed for dress to be a prominent player in new experiments in image-making. Moderated by Eugenia Paulicelli (Queens College and The Graduate Center, CUNY) with respondent Robert Singer (Kingsborough, CUNY and Liberal Studies, The Graduate Center, CUNY).

Discussion | Coming Out in the Developing World: Exploring Eastern Europe’s Hidden Closets

This panel seeks to evaluate the present state of LGBT rights in Central and Eastern Europe and address some of the tensions and paradoxes, with LGBT human rights caught between the flourishing gay pornography industry in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary and growing homophobia in other parts of the region. While Czech gay porn actors enter the American porn industry, anti-gay protesters threw Molotov cocktails and stones at an October gay pride parade in Belgrade, Serbia, injuring 140 people. Does the open porn industry help the cause of LGBT rights in Eastern Europe? Or does it hinder them? Panelists include Michael Lucas, gay pornographic actor, director, activist, and founder/CEO of Lucas Entertainment and Jeffrey Escoffier, one of the founders of OUT/LOOK: National Lesbian and Gay Quarterly, who has published widely on LGBTQ history, politics, arts and culture, and sexuality.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk with Ioana Nemes

In conjunction with her current residency and exhibition, Times Colliding, Ioana Nemes will discuss ideas and themes of her long-term project, Monthly Evaluations (2001-2010). Based on a thorough daily analysis of her activities split into different departments—intellectual, physical, emotional, financial and the luck/chance factor—via an evaluation grid, the project focused on how one's efficiency might be measured, archived and communicated using words, numbers, mathematical symbols and colors. Monthly Evaluations attempted to dissect time and expose subjective and objective perspectives, uncomfortably switching places.

Dance Performance | José Limón Dance Company

Music of the Americas is proud to continue its collaboration with the renowned José Limón Dance Company. In these salons, members of the company will perform and discuss aspects of its work and that of its founder. The Limón Dance Company is renowned for its dramatic expression and technical mastery. Now in its sixty-third year, the company demonstrates both the timelessness of José Limón’s works and the strength of the vision that leads the Company. Founded in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey, the dancers are now led by Carla Maxwell, who worked closely with Limón before becoming Artistic Director in 1978. The Company pioneered the idea that it was possible to survive the death of its founder, setting an example for the entire dance field. Over the years, the Company’s commitment to producing and presenting programs that balance classic works of American modern dance with commissions from contemporary choreographers has yielded a repertory of unparalleled breadth.

Screening | Korean Animation: Audition (2008)

What line-up of Korean animation would be complete without a glitzy, gaudy, crowd-pleasing anime-style manhwa (Korean manga) adaptation? Based on the most popular manhwa of the late 90's, AUDITION is a teen-girl-ready romance about four dudes, all misfits, who form a rock band. All the main characters are already licensed products in Korea and this feature film version of their well-known story took 8 years to make. It's pure pop culture cream cheese: smooth and delicious.
