Park Walk | Staten Island Freshskills Park Tour

The site, once the world's largest landfill, is being transformed into one of the next great regional parks of the 21st century. Tours are led by the Urban Park Rangers and a member of the Freshkills Park staff. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park is one of the most ambitious public works projects in the world. Once completed, the park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in more than 100 years. In addition to providing a wide range of recreational opportunities, including many uncommon in the city, Freshkills Park's design, ecological restoration and cultural and educational programming will emphasize environmental sustainability and a renewed public concern for our human impact on the earth. Tour guides will discuss the site's history, engineering and landscape design, including the abundant flora and fauna that are returning to the area. The tour will take visitors to the tops of two of the site's four large landfill mounds, offering spectacular vistas of the expansive site as well as views of downtown Manhattan and all four of the Staten Island bridges. In addition, tour participants will learn about the four near-term projects: North Park, with its panoramic landscape overlooking the Travis neighborhood and the tidal creeks of the adjacent William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge; South Park, offering a network of walking and biking trails leading to the top of Little South Mound; Schmul Park, an existing playground that is currently being renovated into a colorful recreation site; and the Owl Hollow Fields.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk with Henry Flynt

Henry Flynt is a philosopher, composer, and artist born in Greensboro, NC in 1940. In 1960 and 1961 he announced some of the ideas that have occupied him ever since, including concept art. Most of his concept art documents were published in An Anthology, ed. La Monte Young (1963). In 1975, he led a country rock band called Nova’billy. (Examples of their performances of Flynt’s music are available on three published recordings.) In the same year, his book Blueprint for a Higher Civilization was published by Multhipla Edizioni, Milan. Flynt was in the Ph.D. program in Economics at the New School from 1970 to 1978, writing his dissertation on socialist economic administration. Flynt resumed making concept art in 1987. He was represented by Emily Harvey Gallery and has shown at the Venice and Lyon Biennales. In 2008, Flynt returned to live music, performing an improvised rock instrumental with his niece Libby Flynt in several cities in Europe and the U.S. Numerous recordings of his music have been released, including the just-released Glissando No. 1.

Concert | Teares of the Muses perform 17th-century German Passion music

The viol consort Teares of the Muses and sopranos Kathleen Cantrell and Campbell Rightmyer perform “Ein Lämmlein: 17th-Century German Passion Music,” a concert prepared specifically for Holy Week. The unusual program features music by the marvelous Bohemian composer Samuel Capricornus, whose few extant works deserve a present-day revival. The concert opens with Capricornus's heart-rending "O Traurigkeit, O Herzeleid." It is followed by his major work about Jesus' martyrdom, "Ein Lämmlein geht und trägt die Schuld." Its five movements are separated by Tunder’s "An Wasserflüßen Babylon," chorale settings by Sebastiani and Scheidt arranged for viols, and somber dance movements by Schein and Funck. The distinctively hued scoring of high voices in combination with viols and organ was an ensemble sound much favored in 17th-century Germany.

Concert | Grand Baton, a Creole Rock Band

The members of Creole rock band Grand Baton hail from the Caribbean, France, and the US, a collective lineage that translates into fearless music unafraid to defy boundaries. With lyrics in Creole and a generously distorted hard-rock sound, the group also features the ka drum—a staple of Saint Lucian folk music—whose supple, polyrhythmic grooves have the effect of smoothing out the band’s power-chord edginess. Hear it all come together during what promises to be an intense, high-energy show.
