Opening Reception | Installation: Julia Chiang's Security Is Mostly A Superstition

Chiang will present a room-size installation of white chains, ranging in length from five to thirty feet, made from handcrafted ceramic links. At once a measurement of distance and tether, the chains seemingly restrain and protect a sacred space imagined by the artist. As in her past sculptural work—which includes a range of media, from gold and candy to etched glass and mirror—Chiang articulates an absurd desire for perfection, revealed in the unevenness and imperfection of human touch. The result is an immersive environment that emanates an emotive spirit marked by connectivity and confinement. Julia Chiang lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA in 2000 from New York University. She has created site-specific projects such as: Emigrate, Travessia, NY; Again and Again, Kantor/Feuer Window, NY (both 2007); and Loves Me, x-girl, NY (2003). Her work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions, including: January White Sale, curated by Beth Rudin DeWoody, Loretta Howard Gallery, NY; A Strange Affinity to the Beautiful and Dreadful, curated by Maureen Sullivan, Hendershot Gallery, NY (both 2011); Postermat, The Hole, NY; It Ain’t Fair, OHWOW, Miami (both 2010); and The House Was Quiet and the World Was Calm, Tina Kim Gallery, NY, curated by Christopher Lew. Chiang's work has also been the subject of solo projects at the Standard, both in New York and Miami, and discussed in publications such as The Fader, Paper Magazine, Modern Painters, Flash Art, The New Yorker, and The New York Times.

Talk | The Language of Wine Labels

Everyone has their own method of buying wine—sometimes it just involves labels less than grapes or their origin. Wine labels are as diverse and individual as book jackets. The old adage says you can't judge a book this way, and wine follows suit. What, then, can we learn from the label of a wine bottle? Wine columnist Lettie Teague explores the nuances of wine labeling that clue us in to the contents of a bottle and reveals that sometimes all is not as it seems. Lettie Teague is a wine columnist and staff writer for The Wall Street Journal. Her column appears on alternate Saturdays in the Off Duty section of WSJ Weekend. She joined the publication in March of 2010, after 12 years as the wine editor and columnist at Food & Wine magazine. Her monthly column, "Wine Matters," won the 2003 James Beard M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award and the 2005 James Beard Award for Magazine Columns. She is the author of Educating Peter, an introduction to wine, and the co-author of Fear of Wine.

Discussion | Vienna’s Muslim-Jewish Conference and its U.S. Partners: Transatlantic Efforts towards Interfaith Understanding

Panelists: Imam Muhammad Shamsi Ali (Imam of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York), Rabbi Marc Schneier (Founder and President, Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, New York), Ilja Sichrovsky (Founder of the Muslim-Jewish Conference, Vienna). In August 2010, the first international Muslim-Jewish Conference took place in Vienna. Initiated by a group of students from Austria, Israel, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United States, the conference saw a coming together of over 100 participants of both faiths. Over a period of six days, the participants produced joint resolutions toward putting an end to the vicious cycle of stereotypes and prejudices, and opening the doors for mutual understanding and respect. This event brings together Ilja Sichrovsky, the Secretary General and Founder of the MJC and Rabbi Marc Schneier, the Founder and President of The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, which is a partner organisation here in New York. They will be joined by Imam Muhammad Shamsi Ali, the Imam of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York. The panelists will explore the ideas behind initiatives such as the Vienna Conference and its U.S. counterparts, as well as the potential impacts of these projects. Can these endeavors really bring about change? What measures can be adopted toward facilitating interfaith understanding and rapprochement?

Discussion | What’s Water Worth? Hydrofracking and Its Impact on New York Drinking Water

Hydraulic fracturing, or “hydrofracking,” is the process of fracturing rocks to stimulate the release of natural gas from wells, a controversial method that raises environmental and health concerns regarding the potential contamination of aquifers. In December, the New York State Senate passed a temporary moratorium on hydraulic fracturing. Despite safety concerns, many communities rely economically on the gas drilling industry and fear the consequences of this ban. Join us as distinguished scientists and activists discuss the balance between New York’s economic need for natural gas drilling and the guaranteed protection of our drinking water resources. This event is in honor of Earth Day, and is cosponsored by Barnard EcoReps and the President’s Office.

Screening | Korean Animation: What Is Not Romance (2009)

A surprisingly moving animated film, WHAT IS NOT ROMANCE is all about a middle aged couple approaching their anniversary and it's as tender, delicate and subtle as the best arthouse movie. Tensions are rising, dinner table conversation is nonexistent and all their romance seems dead. Leaping backwards in time it returns to the beginning of their marriage when they were head over heels in love with each other and traces it to the present when they barely talk and tries to see if there's any way for a couple married for years to get back to the way things were. 70 min.

Poetry Reading | Readings from The Selected Poems of Ted Berrigan

Poets Alice Notley, Anselm Berrigan, and Edmund Berrigan have collaborated again on this new selection of poems by one of the most influential and admired poets of his generation. Reflecting a new editorial approach, this volume demonstrates the breadth of Ted Berrigan’s poetic accomplishments by presenting his most celebrated, interesting, and important work. This major second-wave New York School poet is often identified with his early poems, especially The Sonnets, but this selection encompasses his full poetic output, including the later sequences Easter Monday and A Certain Slant of Sunlight, as well as many of his uncollected poems.
