Lecture | Recent Fatwas from the Ulema Council of Afghanistan: The Role of Islamic Jurisprudence in Afghanistan in the Post-9/11 Era

A talk by Dr. Emily Jane O'Dell. Since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the Ulema Council of Afghanistan has been playing an influential role in political affairs and civil society. Recent fatwas (religious opinions) from the Ulema Council of Afghanistan demonstrate the Council's influence over legislative and judicial matters, and illustrate how the Ulema Council attempts to reconcile Afghanistan's constitution with Islamic law. This talk will analyze how recent fatwas from the Ulema Council promote a distinct brand of Islam for the nation and adjudicate agendas of secularization and reform in domestic politics, international relations, human rights, and the media.

Lecture | Beyond the Bulldozer: Urban Renewal, Preservation, and the Legacy of Urban Planning since the 1960s

Fifty years ago, Jane Jacobs stated that city planning had “stagnated” since the 1930s. “It bustles but it does not advance,” she wrote in The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Jacobs’ book inspired a rethinking of planning and urban design. Her devastating critique of urban renewal, together with her activism, helped launch a movement in opposition to the bulldozer and the wrecking ball. Historian Alison Isenberg offers a fresh perspective on planning and urban design from 1950 through the 1970s, years when design professionals challenged urban renewal and struggled to offer Americans something better. The talk focuses on San Francisco, exploring the city’s reaction to the prospect of “Manhattanization” and its efforts to forge an alternative model.

Discussion | New Perspectives on African Architecture and Urbanism

Renowned anti-apartheid activist and South African Constitutional Court Justice Albie Sachs played a critical role in ensuring that healing and hope were expressed by both the architecture and the art collection of the new Constitutional Court building, opened in 2004 on the site of the notorious Old Fort Prison Complex, on Johannesburg's Constitution Hill. This discussion between Justice Sachs and international-affairs expert James Hoge will include a screening of the film A Light on a Hill: A Tour of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Sachs and Hoge's conversation will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Lecture | The 1960s: The Struggle for Justice Intensifies

What were the real 1960s? Was it the successful struggle for Civil Rights and voting rights? Was it the expansion of Social Security with the establishment of Medicare and Medicaid? Was it nine years of uninterrupted prosperity and economic growth? Or, was it the eruption of riots in all of our major cities? Was it a divisive war that led to terrible domestic disunion? Was it the decade of horrifying political assassinations? Was it sex, drugs and rock "n" roll? This series of lectures will confront these issues head on. We will feature individuals of great artistic and scholarly achievement. Many were also active participants in one or more of the struggles that occurred in that decade.
