Lecture | Youth Interactions with Contemporary Political-Economic Circumstances of the Post-War Western Balkans

A lecture by Colette Daiute, The Graduate Center, City University of New York. Drawing on research reported in Human Development and Political Violence, this talk depicts the contemporary situation in BiH, Croatia, Serbia, and a Bosnian community in the United States from the perspective of young people growing up during 1990s wars. With examples from a six-year ethnographic study and community social history project, Daiute will present results of an analysis indicating young people’s intense focus on present and future political-economic issues, rather than on the often-assumed residual trauma caused by past events or social reproduction of past ideologies. This discussion of youth narratives addresses the importance of their interactions with local threats and opportunities in relation to national and international political narratives.

Discussion | Roundtable on Emma Gilligan's Terror in Chechnya: Russia and the Tragedy of Civilians in War

Terror in Chechnya is the definitive account of Russian war crimes in Chechnya. Emma Gilligan provides a comprehensive history of the second Chechen conflict of 1999 to 2005, revealing one of the most appalling human rights catastrophes of the modern era--one that has yet to be fully acknowledged by the international community. Drawing upon eyewitness testimony and interviews with refugees and key political and humanitarian figures, Gilligan tells for the first time the full story of the Russian military's systematic use of torture, disappearances, executions, and other punitive tactics against the Chechen population. This panel brings together a group of distinguished scholars and experts to discuss the arguments and findings of Gilligan's book. Panelists: Emma Gilligan, Assistant Professor of Russian History and Human Rights, University of Connecticut. She is also the author of Defending Human Rights in Russia: Sergei Kovalyov, Dissident and Human Rights Commissioner, 1969-2003. Jason Lyall, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Yale University Kimberly Marten, Professor of Political Science, Barnard College Diederik Lohman, Senior Researcher, Human Rights Watch

Symposium | Between Stalin and Hitler: Mass Murder in Central and Eastern Europe

An international symposium with Timothy Snyder (Yale University), bestselling author of Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin and leading historians István Deák (Columbia University), Pawel Machcewicz (University of Warsaw), and Yaroslav Hrytsak (L’viv University) to discuss Snyder’s recent book. Bloodlands is a lucid, humane, and moving account of the history of the region - rather than of a single country - between Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union, written with new information from formerly classified archives and rich with individual accounts of the consequences of horror perpetrated in these lands from both directions. Snyder proceeds from individual stories of the tragedies of the “Bloodlands” between Germany and the Soviet Union, and then he multiplies those stories by the millions who were killed due to policies of famine and mass starvation, death camps, deportations, hard labor, gassings, and executions.

Lecture | The 1960s: The Struggle for Justice Intensifies

What were the real 1960s? Was it the successful struggle for Civil Rights and voting rights? Was it the expansion of Social Security with the establishment of Medicare and Medicaid? Was it nine years of uninterrupted prosperity and economic growth? Or, was it the eruption of riots in all of our major cities? Was it a divisive war that led to terrible domestic disunion? Was it the decade of horrifying political assassinations? Was it sex, drugs and rock "n" roll? This series of lectures will confront these issues head on. We will feature individuals of great artistic and scholarly achievement. Many were also active participants in one or more of the struggles that occurred in that decade.
