Hike | Tour Natural and Manmade Water Filtration Systems and Tunnel Workers Memorial

Hikes, August 13, 2017, 08/13/2017, Tour Natural and Manmade Water Filtration Systems and Tunnel Workers Memorial

Sunday, August 13, 2017, 10:00 am

$3

A hike and informational tour of the natural wetlands and manmade water systems in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. You will hike the great trails of the Croton Woods, the Northeast Forest and the Shandler Recreation Area and learn about how the Bronx supplies water to the rest of the city and what sacrifices - both in terms of the ecology and loss of human life - had to be made so we can receive clean water every day.

The hike will be approximately 5 miles and take under 4 hours. There are a couple of hilly spots, but for the most part it's level ground. You will be in the woods for the vast majority of the hike with a bit of street walking during the second half. You will visit the Tunnel Workers Memorial on East 233rd street.

Route: walk the Putnam Nature Trail to the John Muir Trail link, cross the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, continue on the Muir to the Northeast Forest. Restrooms and water at 233rd street. Visit the Tunnel Workers Memorial, re-enter the park at the Shandler Recreation Area, tour the manmade wetlands and learn about the Croton Filtration Plant.  Bring binoculars for wildlife watching opportunities if you wish.

Ticks: There may be ticks in the woods, so dress like you normally would for a forest hike.
