Workshop | An Afternoon of Rowing in New York Harbor


At this rowing session, after a brief orientation, participants will be assigned to a crew with an experienced coxswain to steer the boat and a mixture of experienced and new rowers. The boats, Whitehall gigs, are stable, traditional working boats for four rowers and a coxswain. No experience is necessary and rowers of all ability levels are welcome! The rowing sessions last several hours and are designed to be excursions: groups row against the tide to a destination, take a break onshore or in a protected cove, then return home with the tide. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Please complete the waiver before you arrive.

Workshop | Halloween-Inspired Drop-In Craft Workshop with a 19th-Century Printing Press


A hands-on experience crafting Halloween paper decorations, paper chains, and folded-paper bats. For an extra thrill, skilled Bowne designers will be on hand to guide you through crafting your own letterpress-printed broadside posters using a 19th-century printing press from the museum's working collection. Don’t miss this opportunity to add a touch of spookiness to your seasonal decorations and learn more about the art of traditional letterpress printing.  Anyone age 5 and up is welcome. All participants get to take home the items they create during the afternoon. Access to this event includes walking up and down a few stairs.

Workshop | Kayaking in a Hudson River Cove


This event provides the equipment, instruction, and oversight you need to experience a safe and fun afternoon of kayaking on the Hudson River. The program is beginner-friendly, and no prior experience is required. Participants must be at least 18 years old (or accompanied by a parent or guardian) and know how to swim. Come dressed to get wet! Lockers and locks will be provided to keep valuables dry, and on-site changing rooms will be available for use. To save time, you can also sign a waiver before arriving to save time, available at the link provided. Be sure to allow time for waiting in line when planning your visit. You may not get a chance to kayak if you arrive less than an hour before the boathouse closes.

Shipwrecks, sirens, and mythical goddesses meet magic, death, and revenge. Voyage across land and sea, through the underworld, and to the top of Mt. Olympus as Odysseus seeks his homeland and the arms of his loving wife in this epic one-person storytelling adventure. A one-person epic version of The Odyssey, re-imagining Homer's famous tale in a faithful yet accessible performance suitable for most audiences. Adapted by Charlie Bethel Directed by Amy Rummenie Performed by John Heimbuch Warning: The Odyssey contains descriptions of sexuality, monster-fighting, suitor-killing violence, and is best appreciated by audiences age 11 or older.
