Slide Lecture | Tom Scocca discusses his book Beijing Welcomes You

Beijing has debuted as the defining city of the now and foreseeable future, and China as the ascendant global power. Beijing is the ultimate representation of China's political and cultural capital. The journalist and Slate blogger, decamped to China in 2004, in time to watch Beijing gear up for the Olympics. As an American eager to see another culture and with preparations in full swing to create a renewed city, he reports on the stunning transformation of the city, which entailed everything from rerouting traffic, planting trees, and outlawing public spitting to engineering the weather. In this illustrated lecture, he makes a case for Beijing as the capital of the future.

Discussion | The essential nature of successful, collaborative relationships - come to play!

Join writer, artist and architect, Barry Svigals along with co-authors, Trina Learned, Jon Calame, Randall Hoyt and Maria Verrier, for a lively discussion on the essential nature of successful, collaborative relationships, accompanied by readings from their recent book, Collaboration, and music played by the Density Twins Band The need for collaboration is everywhere! We often don’t see how it shapes our lives on a global scale and in our most intimate interactions. In almost every encounter, there are opportunities to work with others to serve a collective purpose. The glue that binds together all successful endeavors is collaboration: the intentional process of honoring each other’s contributions in the pursuit of a common goal. True collaboration is something to which we all aspire, but seldom embody. Join us for an evening of collaborative exploration, with some feisty contrariness and obtuse rejoinders! Or just come and move to the rhythm of the Density Twins Band. Come to play! Hosts for the evening include: Barry Svigals, Artist, Architect, Managing Partner, Svigals+Partners; Jon Calame, Author and Founder, Minerva Partnership, Adjunct Professor of Architecture, Columbia University; Trina Mace Learned, Founder, Learned1, Resource Planning Consultants; Randall Hoyt, Graphic Designer, Professor, University of Connecticut; Maria Verrier, Founder, Third Rail Strategies, Eric Epstein, Epstein Design, founding member of the Density Twins Band, Jon Pepper, President-For-Life, Pepcom Presentations, flashy guitarist, Density Twins Band
