Jazz | Max Wild, Jazz Saxophonist

Saxophone innovator Max Wild has been a forerunner on the Afro-jazz scene in New York since commanding international attention with his ObliqSound release Tamba in 2010. Screening | Italian Cinema: Raffaello Matarazzo's Chains (1949)

After years of making mostly comedies and literary adaptations, Raffaello Matarazzo turned to melodrama with this intense tale of a tight-knit working-class family shattered by temptation. There’s a touch of noir in Chains, in which the saintly yet earthy Yvonne Sanson, as the devoted wife of a mechanic, finds herself unwillingly drawn back to an ex-love who has turned to crime. 94 min. In Italian with English subtitles. Introduced by Inga Pierson (Stanford University). Followed by a panel discussion with Stefano Albertini and Antonio Monda. Film history is replete with artists embraced by critics but misunderstood by the public. For Italian filmmaker Raffaello Matarazzo, it was the opposite. After working for almost two decades as a midlevel studio director of pictures that enjoyed varying success, mainly light comedies and adaptations of novels, Matarazzo broke through to box-office glory with a series of passionate, consummately constructed melodramas, made from the late forties through the fifties. Though immensely popular, the films were dismissed by the critical establishment of the day: they were unabashedly soap-operatic entertainments, with plots convoluted to the point of near derangement, exaggerated Catholic symbolism, and a dedication to upholding the sacred family unit at any cost. Critics on the left deemed them reactionary; for Catholics, they were too overheated and sexual; and mainstream reviewers thought them frivolous and cheap—a poor man’s neorealist cinema. That, however, is exactly what these rip-roaring, outrageously fun movies were designed to be: they followed the neorealist vogue for stories about earthy working-class people but were far from gritty and made mainly for suburban audiences, which gorged themselves on their sweeping, sentimental twists and turns. They were also emotionally rich and elegantly woven—captivating tales of crisis that spoke to postwar Italian audiences in need of catharsis. And today, after years of rehabilitation (by a group of French critics in the sixties and by Italian critics in the seventies), Matarazzo’s movies are admired for their gleefully overwrought stories and finely calibrated direction. These are treasures from the golden age of fifties melodrama, deserving mention in the same breath as the magnificent moonstruck movies of the likes of Douglas Sirk, Vincente Minnelli, and Luchino Visconti. Based on actual diaries, letters and interviews, Unsinkable Women brings to life eight famous figures. The stories of these women are created and performed by New York actress Deborah Jean Templin. Unsinkable Women offers a variety of contrasting moods and impressions. But, it's also punctuated with period songs ranging from vaudeville numbers to Victor Herbert's "Toyland." The Edwardian era costumes used in the show are housed onstage in an old-fashioned wardrobe trunk. Templin changes garb and shifts from character to character in full view of the audience.

Author Reading | Kate Ascher talks about her book The Heights: Anatomy of a Skyscraper

The skyscraper is perhaps the most recognizable icon of the modern urban landscape. Providing offices, homes, restaurants, and shopping to thousands of inhabitants, modern skyscrapers function as small cities- with infrastructure not unlike that hidden beneath our streets. Clean water is provided to floors thousands of feet in the sky; elevators move people swiftly and safely throughout the building; and telecom networks allow virtual meetings with people on other continents. How are these services-considered essential, but largely taken for granted- possible in such a complex structure? What does it really take to sustain human life at such enormous heights?

Lecture | To Know Wisdom and Instruction: 500 Years of Armenian Printing, and a History of the Armenian Collection at the Library of Congress

A Lecture by Dr. Levon Avdoyan. In 1512, seventy-two years after Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press, Armenian words were first put to paper by movable type. In this lecture, Dr. Levon Avdoyan, one of the world's leading authorities on manuscripts from the region, will discuss an upcoming exhibit at the Library of Congress commemorating the 500th anniversary of Armenian printing, and also provide a lively tour of the library's Armenian collection. During his tenure, beginning in 1977, the Armenian collection has grown from some 7,000 items to an estimated 45,000, covering myriad subject! s and formats. The lecture's title-"To Know Wisdom and Instruction"-is taken from a Biblical passage in Proverbs, the first words written in the Armenian alphabet, in 405 AD. Since that time, Armenian writers have developed a unique cannon of work and a rich literary tradition.

Author Reading | William Benton discusses his book Exchanging Hats: Paintings

When the distinguished art critic Meyer Schapiro said that Elizabeth Bishop “writes poems with a painter’s eye,” Bishop was “very flattered: I’d love to be a painter.” The fact is—though not many knew it—she painted throughout her life, as this handsome book, reproducing in full color forty of her works, demonstrates. The paintings were tracked down, identified, and collected by the poet and art writer William Benton, who arranged the first exhibit of Bishop’s artwork (twenty–seven pieces) in January 1993 at the East Martello Tower Museum as part of the Key West Literary Seminar on Bishop’s writing. "William Benton gives the provenance, dimensions, and (where possible) the date of each work. In the second half of the book, he also cites many painterly passages from Bishop’s writing. Typically, after admitting that occasionally she painted “a small gouache or watercolor,” Bishop asserted: “They are Not Art—NOT AT ALL.” William Benton concludes, “They are, though.” In paperback for the first time since its publication, this edition of Exchanging Hats is sure to generate a renewed appreciation for this multi–talented artist.

Jazz | Raymond Scott Orchestrette

Deemed “The Gertrude Stein of Dada Jazz,” composer and inventor Raymond Scott rose to prominence in the late 1930s leading a six-piece Quintette which performed novelties that were part jazz and part chamber music. Warner Brothers music director Carl Stalling adapted Scott’s controlled mayhem in Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoons, bringing immortality to many Scott themes, later revived when songs like his classics “Powerhouse” “The Toy Trumpet” and “Twilight in Turkey” were featured in Ren & Stimpy¸and paid homage to by artists as diverse as Don Byron, Soul Coughing, MadLib, and They Might Be Giants. Formed by producer and Scott authority Irwin Chusid, the New York City-based Raymond Scott Orchestrette (RSO) brings Scott’s legacy into the 21st century, performing modernistic interpretations of his best-known works. The band's repertoire includes lesser-known, non-cartoon works like “Coming Down to Earth” and “Sleepwalker,” works and acoustic renditions of Scott's later electronica, such as Soothing Sounds for Baby's "Little Miss Echo."
