Lecture | The Erotic Entanglements of the Pre-Raphaelites

The Pre-Raphaelites (such as Dante Rosetti, Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris) relished collaboration: they painted each other, used the same models, shared lovers, designed decorative objects together, and philosophized about love, sex, and death. Their erotic natures are made visible in many of their works. This lecture will trace these entanglements, exploring how they influenced the famous paintings that we know so well. Speaker: Deborah Lutz, Phd., Associate Professor of Victorian Literature and Culture, at Long Island University's C.W. Post campus. She is the author of Pleasure Bound: Victorian Sex Rebels and the New Eroticism.

Author Reading | Julie Winch discusses her book The Clamorgans: One Family's History of Race in America

The author and historian captures the vivid lives of the multigenerational Clamorgan family of St. Louis and explores how one family navigated race in America from the 1780s through the 1950s. The Clamorgan clan traces to the family patriarch Jacques Clamorgan, a French adventurer of questionable ethics who bought up, or at least claimed to have bought up, huge tracts of land around St. Louis. On his death, he bequeathed his holdings to his mixed race, illegitimate heirs, setting off nearly two centuries of litigation. The Clamorgans is a window on a remarkable family that by the early twentieth century variously claimed to be black, Creole, French, Spanish, Brazilian, Jewish, and white.

Lecture | Mapping Community Arts: Subversion, Repressive Tolerance and Pastoral Power

In recent years there has been increased attention to so-called 'socially engaged art practices.' Equipped with a sense of urgency and intent, artists and curators develop work with the support of communities or groups to tackle political and social issues. While the successes of these projects are not easily measurable, they often reiterate the role of artist/curator as protagonists of specific forms of social change, which posits a direct contrast to recent activism which carefully distances itself from any leader-based political organizational categories. Pascal Gielen, co-editor of the recently published volume Community Art, will draw out a critical cartography of community art and will speak about the power and impotencies of this phenomenon. Since modernity, art and community, artist and social work have had an ambivalent relationship. Can art have a role in building communities? What is the political potency of forms of art that strive to integrate individuals and social groups?

Talk | When Barack Met Angela: Perceptions and Misperceptions in US-German Relations

As Max Weber has argued, political leadership is not solely shaped by rational decision-making. Rather, cultural perceptions and constructions shape and refracture political power relations in the modern world. Focusing on German-American relations, the talk will explore perceptions and misperceptions in current transatlantic relations. Why did the early infatuation for Barack Obama give way to disenchantment and rifts in policy preferences, ranging from environmental issues to coping with the global financial crisis? What is the relationship between the two key actors, Angela Merkel and Barack Obama, and how does it shape relations between Europe and the United States? How do they cope with the growing disenchantement of parts of the electorate, and what are the prospects of German-American relations? Speaker Christiane Lemke is Professor of Political Science at Leibniz University, Hannover, Germany, and currently Max Weber Chair for German and European Politics. Her work focuses on democratic transitions in Europe, German politics, and political culture.

Author Reading | Anthony Bailey discusses his book Velazquez and 'The Surrender at Breda'

Anthony Bailey vividly resurrects the life of one of the world’s greatest painters. Velazquez’s brilliant narrative painting 'The Surrender at Breda,' which was based on one of Spain’s few victories in its eighty–year war with the Netherlands. Ironically, the conflict brought the tottering Madrid Hapsburgs to their knees, writing finis to Spain’s legendary golden age. Bailey demonstrates an astounding ability to put himself in the artist’s shoes, coaxing from the paintings stories that flesh out a portrait of Velazquez unknown until now.

Author Reading | Artist Dana Schutz discusses her monograph If the Face Had Wheels

Published to coincide with an exhibit at the Neuberger Museum of Art at SUNY Purchase in Fall 2011, this monograph offers the first comprehensive look at one of the most exciting young artists working today. Dana Schutz plumbs the depths of humor and horror, fantasy and reality in her colorful, expressive paintings, and this retrospective features paintings and drawings created by Schutz since 2001. Each of her wildly inventive series is represented, beginning with Frank as a Proboscis Monkey, which wittily depicts the last man on earth, to her current Verb paintings, in which a woman attempts to perform three incongruous activities at once. Schutz’s commentary on twenty-first-century politics, celebrity, religion, and mores is both absurdist and prescient. Her works are splashed with vibrant color and enriched with tactile brushwork. Schutz combines traditional technique with innovative content to create ambitious idiosyncratic paintings for our anxious age.

Screening | Documentary: Jack Smight's The Sound of Jazz (1957)

Perhaps the most iconic jazz film ever made, The Sound of Jazz brought together 32 leading musicians from the swing era, including Count Basie, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Jo Jones, and Coleman Hawkins; the Chicago style players of the same era, such as Henry "Red" Allen, Vic Dickenson, and Pee Wee Russell; and younger "modernist" musicians such as Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk, and Jimmy Giuffre. These players played separately with their compatriots, but also joined to combine various styles in one group, such as Red Allen's group and the group backing Billie Holiday on "Fine and Mellow," one of the most poignant moments of jazz ever caught on film. The song brought back together Lester Young and Holiday; Young's blues solo is transcendent in its painful beauty and sophisticated simplicity. 60 min.

Author Reading | Joshua Cody discusses his book [sic]

Cody, a brilliant young composer, was about to receive his PhD when he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. Facing a bone-marrow transplant and full radiation, he charts his struggle: the fury, the tendency to self-destruction, and the ruthless grasping for life and sensation; the encounter with a strange woman on Canal Street that leads to sex at his apartment; the detailed morphine fantasy complete with a bride called Valentina while, in reality, hospital staff are pinning him to his bed. Moving effortlessly between references to Don Giovanni and the Rolling Stones, Ezra Pound and Buffalo Bill, and facsimiles of his own diaries and hospital notebooks, [sic] is a cross between Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor and Jay McInerny's Bright Lights, Big City: a mesmerizing, hallucinatory glimpse into a young man's battle against disease and a celebration of art, language, music, and life.

Concert | Memorial Concert of Polish Composer Henryk Gorecki

The memorial concert honoring Gorecki on the first anniversary of his death will be performed by internationally acclaimed ensembles Ensemble Signal, led by Music Director and Conductor Brad Lubman, and the JACK Quartet. Although Gorecki was known most especially for his immensely popular Symphony No. 3, "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs," this concert showcases extraordinary chamber works from his later compositional period. These works present Gorecki's persistent, uncompromising artistic vision in bold relief. Taken together, and performed by two truly vanguard ensembles of the new music scene, this program offers a personal, finely etched portrait of a great artist.
