Screening | chashama Film Festival: Chaos Theory - The Rise and Fall of Societies

In its fourth year, chashama Film Festival invites artists to explore the current state of flux in the world, with a focus on societal change brought on by clashing philosophical and sociological ideals. We highlight the work of filmmakers who are not afraid to explore the outer limits of social stability and ask: What next? How do we respond to social changes that are too vast and too rapid for us to comprehend, let alone control? What can we do, individually and as a society, to avert disaster? What would mass disruption and instability mean for the future of humanity?

Talk | Looking Backward: History, the Holocaust, and Literary Writing in the Third Generation

Author Erika Dreifus will be the guest speaker. Dreifus is the author of Quiet Americans, a short-story collection that is inspired largely by the experiences and histories of her paternal grandparents, German Jews who immigrated to New York in the late 1930s. Her presentation will situate her book within a new and increasingly visible cohort of fiction writers and poets: grandchildren of refugees from and survivors of Nazism. In discussing and reading from these works, Erika will suggest ways in which the third generation is creating a profoundly historical literature of its own.
