Book Discussion | Book Club: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they’d weigh more than 50 million metric tons—as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave.

Performance | One-Woman Show: Dorothy Leeds' Good Lessons from Bad Women

As Good Lessons from Bad Women begins, it reveals the many sides of Dorothy: stuck between Eleanor Roosevelt as the embodiment of virtue, and the delicious controversies in the lives of five other women: Mae West, Anne Bonney, Eve, Emperor Wu Chau, Elizabeth Freeman, and Mrs. "Machine Gun" Kelly, who became famous (or infamous) for coloring outside the lines. They are unique and often comic portraits of real women that eventually become facets of one woman’s wish to live a spirited life. Dorothy Leeds is a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, AFTRA, and the Dramatists Guild whose credits include the first National Tour of Stop the World I Want to Get Off. Ms.Leeds has performed and presented at various venues from The Smoot Theatre, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Levy Performing Arts Center, and at many Nassau County Libraries. She is also a keynote speaker and the author of The 7 Powers of Questions, PowerSpeak, and Marketing Yourself. Ms. Leeds is a former film critic for MSNBC and makes weekly broadcast appearances on KCMN Colorado.

Author Reading | Hal Foster discusses his books The First Pop Age and The Art-Architecture Complex

Who branded painting in the Pop age more brazenly than Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, and Ed Ruscha? And who probed the Pop revolution in image and identity more intensely than they? In The First Pop Age, leading critic and historian Hal Foster presents an exciting new interpretation of Pop art through the work of these Pop Five. Beautifully illustrated in color throughout, the book reveals how these seminal artists hold on to old forms of art while drawing on new subjects of media; how they strike an ambiguous attitude toward both high art and mass culture; and how they suggest that a heightened confusion between images and people is definitive of Pop culture at large. In The Art—Architecture Complex, Hal Foster argues that a fusion of architecture and art is a defining feature of contemporary culture. Foster tackles the fusion of architecture and art that has increasingly come to dominate both fields as the new ‘global style,’ which, more than any art, conveys the look of modernity today, both its dreams and its delusions. Foster demonstrates that “the art-architecture complex” is a key indicator of broader social and economic trajectories and in urgent need of analysis and debate.
