Talk | The Work of the Carnegie Endowment in the Balkans after World War I: The University of Belgrade, 1919-1926

A talk by Nadine Akhund, Ph.D., Sorbonne University. Among the significant features of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP), was not only the study of the causes but also of the impacts of the wars on civilian populations. Following World War One, the Carnegie Endowment revitalized its effort to promote international conciliation and undertook major works of reconstruction throughout Europe. Starting in 1919, the Endowment financed the construction of several university and public libraries in Belgium, France and Yugoslavia. In Belgrade, the project was supervised by Leo Capser, a former lieutenant in the US Navy nominated as the head of the Carnegie Committee in Belgrade. Drawing from Capser’s CEIP reports, the paper follows the various stages of the project starting with the formation of the Committee, the relationship between its seven members (US and Serbs/Yugoslav), their opinions and the unfolding of the construction-work. The paper also examines the triangular relationship among three sharply contrasted actors during the complex immediate post-war period: one relatively new non-profit organization (CEIP) and the two states, Yugoslavia and USA, the former newly created, barely internationally recognized and the later a new comer on the international stage. Despite obstacles, the library with room for 200,000 books, was inaugurated in May 1926.

Opening Reception | 3 Art Shows: Arboretum / Privacy Please! / I did not provide the cup

Barbara Siegel's biographically inspired installations memorialize and subjectively re-imagine the complexities and creative trajectories of other people's lives. The subject and inspiration for Arboretum is the life and practice of horticulturalist Dr. Sidney Waxman (1923-2005). Privacy Please! explores how women artists express private grooming rituals in their work. During the second wave of the modern feminist movement in the 1970's, female scholars questioned notions of beauty and how its perception was often linked to social standards. Jan Johnson's work in I did not provide the cup simultaneously embraces and rejects the image of the domestic. Growing up in the South, Jan shares a deep tradition of women's domestic activities-quilting, embroidery, samplers and quilling. She learned to "make do" with what one has at home, efficiently and effectively. Her interests lie in the appropriation and subversion of these handiwork techniques.

Screening | South African Documentary: Liza Key's Rewind (2004)

The hearings held by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) were an extraordinary moment in the history of South Africa, one whose impact reverberated around the world. In an effort to ensure a peaceful transition from apartheid to democracy, the TRC heard the testimony of 21,000 victims and 7,000 perpetrators. To mark the tenth anniversary of the opening of the hearings in 2004, composer Philip Miller (Yizo Yizo, Heartlines, William Kentridge’s 9 Drawings for Projection Phillip Noyce’s Catch a Fire) created Rewind: A Cantata for Voice, Tape and Testimony. South African filmmaker Liza Key made a documentary, also called Rewind, about the creation of Miller’s cantata and the TRC hearings on which it is based. Along with the composer’s account of the cantata’s development, Key presents clips from the Market Theatre performance of the cantata; interviews with victims, survivors, and perpetrators; documents from the security police archives; and scenes from the TRC hearings themselves.

Author Reading | Joshua David discusses his book The Secret History of the High Line

The High Line, a new park atop an elevated rail structure on Manhattan’s West Side, is among the most innovative urban reclamation projects in memory. The story of how it came to be is a remarkable one: two young citizens—Joshua David and Robert Hammond—with no prior experience in planning and development collaborated with their neighbors, elected officials, artists, local business owners, and leaders of burgeoning movements in horticulture and landscape architecture to create a park celebrated worldwide as a model for creatively designed, socially vibrant, ecologically sound public space.

Discussion | The Reluctant Doctorate: PhD Programs for Artists?

Can pursuing the doctorate remove the artist from the art-making practice? Does an artist pursuing a PhD need an MFA? What are some of the economic consequences of widespread PhD programs for artists in the US? These questions are examined by a panel of artists and academics that includes: media artist and UCLA Professor Victoria Vesna, PhD; artist Tim Gilman-Sevcik, doctoral candidate at the European Graduate School in Switzerland; MIT Associate Professor Ute Meta Bauer; and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Associate Professor Mary Anne Staniszewski, PhD. Moderated by artist, educator and former President of the College Art Association Ellen K. Levy. Presented by the BFA Fine Arts Department.

Theater | Theater: Execution of Justice by Emily Mann

On November 27, 1978, disgruntled former city supervisor Dan White calmly loaded a gun, entered San Francisco City Hall through a basement window, and proceeded upstairs, where he assassinated Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk with multiple shots fired at point-blank range. The ensuing trial was epic, the verdict legendary. Execution of Justice is presented as part of Drama’s First Look Workshop Performance Series of classic and modern works staged in a final rehearsal atmosphere, with minimal sets, lights, costumes, and props.

Concert | Mucca Pazza, a “Circus Punk Marching Band”

This astounding 30-plus member circus punk marching band bulks up anarchic brass arrangements with gloriously mischievous polyphony. Mucca Pazza includes the usual brass and percussion, with what it calls its “freak” section—guitars, mandolins, violins and accordions amplified with speakers in the musicians’ helmets. The group is a collection of shameless band nerds wielding instruments of incongruous traditions, sometimes in competition, often in cooperation. They have been called everything from “circus punk,” to “geek love,” but no one calls them dull.
