Lecture | Gertrude Stein: Sounding It Out

A free brown bag lunch talk. Many scholars and poets have written about the remarkable experience of hearing Gertrude Stein’s texts read aloud. “Language poets” who emerged in the 1960s and 1970s and who form important scholarly communities today have adopted Stein as an early influence and a model. In part, the nature of this relationship has been ascribed to the indeterminacy and the manner of language play that Majorie Perloff and others see evinced in Stein’s writing, but the extent to which prosody and rhythm has also influenced these artists goes undocumented. This talk will discuss a use-case study using data mining to examine clusters of patterns in Stein’s poetry and prose compared to those in non-fiction narratives and oral histories as well as those present in contemporary poetry. Speaker Tanya Clement is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas, Austin. She has a PhD in English Literature and Language and an MFA in fiction. She has published pieces on digital humanities and digital literacies in several books and on digital scholarly editing, text mining and modernist literature in Journal of the Text Encoding Initiative, Literary and Linguistic Computing, and Texas Studies in Literature and Language.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Billy Childish's I Am The Billy Childish

A modern day renaissance man, prolific artist, writer and musician Billy Childish truly embraces and encompasses the expression “walking to the beat of his own drum.” Over thirty-five years of continual creative activity, Childish has gained a cult status world-wide writing and publishing over forty volumes of confessional poetry, recording over one hundred LPs, and painting several hundred works, all the while refusing to conform to the contemporary art world’s standards and placed importance on the market. As a poet, novelist and painter, Childish has explored throughout his work, and often with a startling honesty, his struggles in coming to terms with addiction, abuse, and a childhood spent in a dysfunctional family setting.

Concert | Dutch Pop Artists: Kensington / Birgit / Nicole Bus

San Francisco-based ZIP RECORDS is proud to present three of the best new talents from the Netherlands in a showcase concert. Alt-rock band KENSINGTON is shooting its way up the consciousness of Dutch audiences. Following up on their hit single "Youth," KENSINGTON upped that success with the 2011 single release of "Let Go" and their debut album "Borders," just released in the US. Dutch magazine OOR commented: "KENSINGTON (is) one of the best bands of the Netherlands." Consistently performing to sold out crowds in Holland, Jakarta, Indonesia and Serbia, KENSINGTON is now prepared to invade the U.S. Amsterdam's BIRGIT craves the spotlight. A singer, actress and TV personality, BIRGIT does it all with an air of style and fun. BIRGIT's songs reflect her unique attributes: full throttle rock & roll, tingling ballads and pop songs. Provocative, unique, powerful, lovely and exotic are all words used to describe her music. An acclaimed actress, BIRGIT has appeared in numerous movies such as the leading roles in the 2004 blockbuster "Floris" and the 2005 Dutch TV series "Lieve Lust;" her voice was featured in the Dutch voice-dubbing of the films "Ice Age" and "Sponge Bob." Having appeared in two Dutch movies this year, her next flick will be in English. After a three month run in David Mamet's "Sexual Perversity" in 2007, BIRGIT took the lead in the off Broadway musical "Last 5 Years." An "international stew" of Surinamese, Antilian and Chinese descent, BIRGIT was nominated for Best Album and Best Singer for her debut album on Virgin Records. NICOLE BUS won the 2010 Grand Prize in Holland's annual Songwriter's Awards, voted Best New Talent by the Dutch music industry. Having first made a name for herself in the Netherlands with her 2009 debut album singing Gospel songs, the 22 year old singer/songwriter/guitarist has moved into the rock/pop genre on her new CD, dropping in the US in early 2012.

Screening | First Features 3

First Features is a student-run screening series dedicated to the many exemplary and auspicious debuts in cinematic history. While there are certain aesthetic exceptions, the films screened in the series are all "first" works in some sense (debuts, first color films, etc..). Previous screenings have run the gamut from both celebrated debuts such as Citizen Kane, Breathless, and Eraserhead to more obscure and recent debuts like Guy Maddin's Tales from the Gimli Hospital and Agnes Varda's La Pointe Courte. Before each screening, a student or faculty member with an interest/expertise in the feature gives a brief introduction in which they consider just what makes this first feature an exemplary model of a debut, both in thematic and formal terms. Screenings are usually followed by a Q&A with the presenter, with prizes awarded for a particularly thoughtful inquiry or observation. Beverages and food are typically served before and after the screening and attendees are encouraged to stick around for a post-screening reception.

Book Signing | George Harrison's widow, Olivia Harrison, signs copies of George Harrison: Living in the Material World

Drawing on George Harrison’s personal archive of photographs, letters, diaries, and memorabilia, Olivia Harrison reveals the arc of his life, from his guitar-obsessed boyhood in Liverpool, to the astonishment of the Beatles years, to his days as an independent musician and bohemian squire. Here too is the record of Harrison’s lifelong commitment to Indian music, and his adventures as a movie producer, Traveling Wilbury, and Formula One racing fan. The book is filled with stories and reminiscences from Harrison’s friends, including Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and many, many others. Among its previously unpublished riches are photographs taken by Harrison himself beginning in the mid-1960s. It is a rich tribute to a man who died far too young, but who touched the lives of millions.

Author Reading | James Wolcott discusses his book Lucking Out

A portrait of critic James Wolcott as a young man, it is also a rollicking, acutely observant portrait of a legendary time and place. Wolcott was taken up by fabled film critic Pauline Kael as one of her “Paulettes” and witnessed the immensely vital film culture of the period. He became an early observer-participant in the nascent punk scene at CBGB, mixing with Patti Smith, Lester Bangs, and Tom Verlaine. As a Village Voice writer he got an eyeful of the literary scene when such giants as Mailer, Gore Vidal, and George Plimpton strode the earth, and writing really mattered.
