Author Reading | Tim Bonyhady reads from his book Good Living Street: Portrait of a Patron Family, Vienna 1900

Bonyhady tells the story of his own family from 1898 to 1998: the Gallia family was one of the great patrons of Viennese art until the second World War started and they had to flee to Australia, bringing with them their exceptional private collection of art and design. He narrates the lives of three generations beginning with the Gallia's origin in Central Europe. He takes the reader from the peak of Viennese culture all the way to the family's escape from the Nazi regime. Tim Bonyhady is an award-winning art historian, curator and environmental lawyer. He is the director of the centre of Climate Law and Policy at the Australian National University. He lives in Canberra, Australia. His great-grandparents were leading patrons of the arts in Vienna and knew many of the city's leading cultural figures. Gustav Klimt painted a portrait of Bonyhady’s great-grandmother. As the November pogrom raged, his family had to flee from the Nazi regime to Australia, bringing with them their collection of art and design.

Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Mark Hadjipateras / James Woodruff

Freestanding, biomorphic, anthropomorphic, robotic and sometimes entomic creatures cast in fiberglass and coated in a broad spectrum of glossy auto-body paint are just some of the characters occupying Mark Hadjipateras' world. On the surface, Hadjipateras' works appear comedic yet there is an underlining seriousness and substance in his projected characters and the world they inhabit. Many of his human-like objects possess physical idiosyncrasies, with gender body characteristics, while they are at the same time featureless. Language in Line suggests a communicable relationship between the seen and unseen, audible and silent. James Woodruff manifests this in his most recent paintings, which pulsate with energy and fluidity. Woodruff is fascinated with an image having the power to reveal something clearly, familiar, that creates visual and experiential dialogue and connection.

For over a decade, Arm has been engaged in an ongoing dialogue between micro and macro, mark and object, structure and line. This new body of work will focus on this through a series of works on paper that use sun and star bursts as their muse. Arm’s obsessive virtuosity creates infinite spaces which focus on surface and depth. Her technique of layering hundreds of times on the painting's surface redefines notions of process and time based painting.

This is Charrin's first solo exhibition. Born in Lyon, France, Charrin considers the past 20 years in New York City as the life of his artistic career. He began his American tale as a banker, but quickly learned that his calling was in the arts. At Parsons School of Design he studied Graphic Design and honed his visual style and creative point of view. Renaud has commissioned design work for reputable clients including Alain Ducasse, for Essex House, Daniel Boulud and Jérôme Bocuse for the Bocuse D’Or USA. As a graphic designer, Renaud has built successful brand identities through his company, 099 Factory, for such clients as Buddha Bar, Hello Pasta, Lyon Restaurant and Rosé Los Angeles. In contrast to the controlled environment in which he creates graphic solutions for his clients, painting allows Renaud to express himself freely and let his personal experiences and the exhilarating New York City environment inspire him to create.

Author Reading | Erika Janik discusses her book Apple: A Global History

The apple's story is, as Henry David Thoreau observed, remarkably "connected with that of man." Born in the mountains of Kazakhstan, apples have traveled the globe and become a species at home nearly everywhere. The apple did such a convincing job in America that many Americans wrongly assume the fruit is a native. Enmeshed in the folklore and history of nations around the globe, apples have been associated with love, beauty, luck, health, comfort, pleasure, wisdom, temptation, sensuality, and fertility-and all this in addition to being just good eating and drinking. Follow the apple from Asia to Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Americas and discover how this remarkable fruit conquered the world.

Author Reading | Ann Beattie discusses her book Mrs. Nixon

In conversation with Edmund White. Pat Nixon remains one of our most mysterious and intriguing public figures, the only modern First Lady who never wrote a memoir. Beattie, like many of her generation, dismissed Richard Nixon's wife: "interchangeable with a Martian," she said. Decades later, she wonders what it must have been like to be married to such a spectacularly ambitious and catastrophically self-destructive man. Drawing on a wealth of sources from Life magazine to accounts by Nixon's daughter and his doctor to The Haldeman Diaries and Jonathan Schell's The Time of Illusion, Beattie reconstructs dozens of scenes in an attempt to see the world from Mrs. Nixon's point of view.

Screening | 2 Documentaries on Women, War and Peace

The War We Are Living by Oriana Zill de Granados, 2011, 60 min. - If you ask Colombia's city dwellers and governing political class, they'll tell you the country's 40-year-old civil war is over. But The War We Are Living reveals the "other" Colombia, in rural areas far away from the capital, where the war is all too real - and now the battle is over gold. In Cauca, a mountainous region in Colombia's Pacific southwest, two extraordinary Afro-Colombian women are fighting to hold onto the gold-rich land that has sustained their community through small-scale mining for centuries. Clemencia Carabali and Francia Marquez are part of a powerful network of female leaders who found that in wartime women can organize more freely than men. As they defy paramilitary death threats and insist on staying on their land, Carabali and Marquez are standing up for a generation of Colombians who have been terrorized and forcibly displaced as a deliberate strategy of war. Narrated by Alfre Woodard. War Redefined by Peter Bull, 2011, 60 min. - War Redefined challenges the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men's domain through incisive interviews with leading thinkers, Secretaries of State and seasoned survivors of war and peace-making. Their experiences reveal how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, with women becoming primary targets and suffering unprecedented casualty rates. Simultaneously, they describe how women are emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace and as leaders in forging new international laws governing conflict. Narrated by Geena Davis.

Concert | Garage, Czech Rock Band

Although the music of the Garage band may be compared to the legendary Velvet Underground, any resemblance stems from the undeniable admiration of their American idols, which the musicians from Prague continue to demonstrate. It is the authentical spontaneity as well as the joy of music that made the Garage one of the symbols of Czech independent music scene. Their music proved as very capable of encouraging the fans for survival in the toughest of times, especially prior to the political change of 1989. In addition, the scene's protagonists, including the Garage, managed to spread some fun when it was badly needed.

Celebrating the release of the album, Songs for Persephone, this drop-dead beautiful collaboration between vocalist Mimi Goese and musician Ben Neill that combines Goese’s emotionally charged vocals and lyrics with Neill’s uniquely hi-tech musical instrumentation. Inspired by the expressive possibilities of new technology as well as the natural beauty of New York’s Hudson Valley and the Hudson River School of painting, Goese and Neill used a fragment of a different 19th century romantic piece as the basis for each their songs.
