Performance | Islands in the Sea: Performance Art

Artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya transforms the site that honors the grieving process. Nine sculptures serve as beacons of reflection, lighting a path forward from losses that so many of us have suffered in the last few years. With this installation, visitors engage in a ritual reminiscent of Loi Krathong, a celebrated Thai festival of gratitude, forgiveness, and respect. Participants are invited to release a floating vessel to carry away their burdens, worries, or grief gently into the pool. Each vessel reflects the sky as it drifts along the water, forming a flotilla of shared struggle. The installation serves as a gentle reminder that while grief never fully leaves us, we can temper sorrow by embracing the many forms that grief and healing may take.

Dance Performance | Solace: World Premiere Dance

Garnet Henderson, NYC-based choreographer, performer, and journalist, is producing and performing in an unconventional, immersive dance experience utilizing the park as the performance space. The new work celebrates the beauty and relief found in our city’s green spaces, particularly in upper Manhattan. Henderson will be joined by four other professional dancers for the performances. The world premiere is Henderson’s first full-length work. The piece utilizes the ecology and community of Inwood Hill Park. The site-specific dance will be performed without recorded music. Instead, the dancers will move to the natural soundscape created by their own bodies and the park itself. In a high-traffic public space, Solace will be viewable from various vantage points, and the ensemble will need to be spontaneous and adaptable, creating a unique performance in the exact moment of time.

Play | Saint Joan: George Bernard Shaw's Classic Drama Performed Outdoors

This timely play is based on historical records of the 1431 trial of French military icon and religious martyr Joan of Arc. The fully realized production is directed by Geoffrey Horne. Shaw's play fictionalizes the historical life of Joan of Arc who became a military leader and changed the history of her nation. Young, French farm girl Joan (Billie Andersson) hears saintly voices telling her to raise an army to fight the English. The failing English, threatened by her popularity and influence, convince the Church to have Joan tried for heresy and she is found guilty. When this force of nature refuses life in prison, she is tragically burned at the stake, becoming a symbol of faith, feminism, and individualism. Tickets are available at 5:45 p.m. the day of the performance.

Dance Performance | duet/duet: Simple Movements, Complex Feelings

duet/duet is a dance that happens on a field in the sunshine next to another dance that happens inside a room, overlooking a river at sunset. It is a dance created between performers opal ingle, Joey Kipp and Jennifer Kjos, in partnership with choreographer Heather Kravas. One dance contemplates a shape made between two people so that we might also consider the distance between them. The other reflects a line as two people travel and change together. What might a line endure or become? How might people draw nearer to one another? Not quite adhering to presentational expectations, the performance hovers between a drawing and a dance, intended as a vessel to experience the specific temporality of dusk. Featuring an electro-acoustic score by composer Zeena Parkins, duet/duet offers a dance built from simple shapes and lines and complex - but not necessarily difficult - feelings.

Play | Richard III: Shakespeare Drama Outdoors

Tony Award nominee Robert O'Hara (Slave Play, The Public's Barbecue) brings his sharp wit and storytelling genius with a bold new production of Richard III. One of Shakespeare's most indelible villains, Richard is determined to be King. Following his lust for power and the throne, he manipulates, kidnaps, and kills all who stand between him and his throne, using brilliant words and dark charm to conceal his dismantling of government and justice. This masterful dive into the muddy middle between political genius and violent power grab arrives with piercing relevancy and electrifying drama.
