Opening Reception | Gracelee Lawrence: Heat Sync

A solo show of large-scale, 3D-printed sculptures and other sculptural work. Lawrence’s works - through their peculiar combination of traditional sculpture and new technologies - are reflective of our current moment. They are both aware of history and our quickly approaching world to come, with all the intermingled dread and techno-optimism the future holds. Through her work, 3D files become tangible, life-sized entities, eerie manifestations of code and data. Her unique object sense, more concerned with the human condition than human touch, merges bodies, plants, and fruits with the digital and the digitally altered, resulting in uncanny and distorted - yet perfectly convincing - material presence.

Opening Reception | Cecilia André: Dancing with Colors

There are few things more abstract than light, yet so dramatically objective. It creates every color on the prism as a fraction of itself. It makes the world visible. Cecilia André has spent years chasing light to create art, which has led her to develop an apparently oxymoronic vision, at once so prosaic and yet exceptional: colored shadows. By overlapping simple translucid materials against a light source, she found a way to harvest color. Dancing with Colors is an immersive experimentation of this process and a subversion of the traditional art space. The myth of the white cube is turned on its head by presenting an installation where nothing is hanging on the walls, and yet they are fully activated. Further, the public is made into part of the work. Everything is canvas. When choosing to step into the space and observe or dance, bodies become non-still life, with each gesture capable of creating a new ephemeral picture. Wearing one of the white covers pushes the participation further by making the chromatic gathering palpable.

Opening Reception | Dissolving Realms: Group Show

This show brings together works spanning over 70 years in a focused survey of painterly investigations into the limits of representation. The paintings on view incorporate fantastical and cosmological themes to conjure realms that either flicker on the precipice of abstraction or dissolve completely into pure color and form. With an international eye, Dissolving Realms draws widely from both art historical and contemporary practices to reflect on the legacies and impact that 20th century artists—namely those associated with Abstract Expressionism, color field painting and Surrealism—have had on young painters of today.

Play | Lear, Part II: Outdoor Shakespeare Adapted to the Old West

California, 1879. The Frontier lies open with the promise of power, wealth, and glory... for some. For others there is only defeat and ruin. Written in the midst of a deadly plague, Lear is a tragedy about family, loyalty, and the choices people make to break free from their restraints. No ghosts, no angry gods, no magic, and no witches. Only the unforgiving skies, the cruelty of the ordinary world, and the human heart's capacity for love and hate, darkness and light. Presented in two parts.

Opening Reception | Lyn Liu: Dogville

An exhibition of new paintings by Lyn Liu (b. 1993, Beijing). Liu’s work addresses the psychological tension underpinning relationships between individuals through a sequence of uncanny cinematic tableaux. Comprised of paintings realized between 2019–2022, the exhibition draws from the artist’s personal experiences of alienation, utilizing symbolism and an atmosphere of the absurd to provoke reflections on what Liu considers our oppressive social reality. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition.

City Walk | Queer History Walk

A walking tour that explores the queer histories of the neighborhood surrounding the museum. This walk will bring visitors to select sites to reflect on the changing nature of queer community as it formed along the New York waterfront. Visit the former sites of bars, clubs, and public spaces and consider the intersection between artistic and sexual experimentation that occurred alongside the piers of the West Side. The walk will culminate with a look at Day's End (2021) by David Hammons, a new permanent public artwork that sketches the shape of the former Pier 52 building and references a work by the artist Gordon Matta-Clark from 1975. The layered history of Hammons’s work serves as a model for how the queer history of the city remains a defining presence in the ever-changing landscape of the neighborhood.

Opera | Handel's Masterpiece Orlando: Hero of Love in a Garden

Hans Tashjian, Bass; Jeffrey Mandelbaum, Countertenor; Elyse Anne Kakacek, Lyric Soprano; Heather Hill, Soprano; Hai-Ting Chinn, Mezzo Soprano; Rebecca Pechefsky, Harpsichordist, Baroque String Quartet (Rebecca Nelson, Rafa Prendergast, Jessica Park & Cullen O'Neil) Orlando, a knight from the Crusades, is originally the central character of an epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto. The story dramatizes his struggle between love and military glory. However, this production updates this conflict to reflect contemporary sensibilities, centering the questions of what it means to love truly, and how to endure pain and loss. George Frideric Handel brought baroque opera to its apogee, as his compositional brilliance amplified music's distinct power to communicate drama. Opera began as an experiment to demonstrate music's ability to reveal and manipulate the emotions behind a text, as opposed to solely mimicking the words. Baroque music relies heavily on a technique of bittersweet dissonance resolving into consoling consonance, which impacts a listener viscerally. The term "baroque" connotes this kind of lavish intensity, which captivates audiences' passions, bringing them personally into the experience.
