Garnet Henderson, NYC-based choreographer, performer, and journalist, is producing and performing in an unconventional, immersive dance experience utilizing the park as the performance space. The new work celebrates the beauty and relief found in our city’s green spaces, particularly in upper Manhattan. Henderson will be joined by four other professional dancers for the performances. The world premiere is Henderson’s first full-length work. The piece utilizes the ecology and community of Inwood Hill Park. The site-specific dance will be performed without recorded music. Instead, the dancers will move to the natural soundscape created by their own bodies and the park itself. In a high-traffic public space, Solace will be viewable from various vantage points, and the ensemble will need to be spontaneous and adaptable, creating a unique performance in the exact moment of time.

Opening Reception | aricoco: Dress for Today and Tomorrow

aricoco pieces together her past and present by experimenting with various methods of merging everyday items with upcycled/cannibalized/repurposed materials. Comparing social structure of human society versus non-hierarchical structure of the insect society, aricoco investigates personal and communal concepts of home as a temporary shelter. In order to create her own temporary shelter, aricoco makes and uses robes as a protective layer, drawing references from the invertebrates with exoskeleton. To do so, she embraces her fear of insects and challenges her own vulnerability. Through this process of making robes and art, aricoco questions the human domination of Earth's ecosystem. As a whole, aricoco’s performative garments reveal her struggle and desperate hope to get through today, and possibly, tomorrow.

Performance | Threads of Joy: Performance Art

Even before the world was torn asunder, we were already losing touch; a loneliness epidemic had been on the rise for decades. We all need to find moments and places where we don’t have to feel alone, even if we are separated by space and time. In Southeast Asia, the use of string and knots is often symbolic of unions and connection. In this installation, a dense canopy of colorful cloth dangles like an ethereal forest, woven from stories of joy and belonging. Visitors can contribute their own stories on strips of fabric to the installation, or simply bear witness to the warmth and community that surrounds them. Small bells affixed near the top of the installation chime softly when visitors pass through the jungle of threads. This piece is an act of resistance against forces that would keep us apart, a place of refuge and togetherness in an often-isolated world.   The participatory event features music by Sunny Jain's Addiction.

Concert | The Aussie BBQ: 6 Bands from Down Under

Celebrate the sounds of Australia, This concert showcases some of the best of the country’s emerging and established talent. Alt-rockers You Am I dominated the Australian charts in the 90s with their albums Hi Fi Way (1995) and #4 Record (1998); Indigenous rapper and dancer Baker Boy spits rhymes in both English and Yolu Matha. Electric Fields fuse electro-soul with vocalist/keyboardist Zaachariaha Fielding’s Aboriginal culture, with vocals in Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara and English; Haiku Hands’ boisterous beats reflect an alternative take on four-on-the-floor dance jams; multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter G Flip, best known for their viral hit “About You,” wields loops and multiple tracks to sound like a massive band, all by themselves; and electronic DJ duo Peking Duk may have first gotten attention with a bootleg Passion Pit remix, but their hit “High” with Nicole Millar has since gone triple platinum in Australia.

Classical Music | Madrigal Madness: Early Music Ensemble and Vocalists

6 vocalists perform eight madrigals by Luca Marenzio (1553/4-1599) from Book 9 (1599). Luca Marenzio's madrigals are considered by many to be the epitome of the a cappella madrigal genre. His Book 9 is famous for its radical use of chromaticism for dramatic effect, all within the framework of the Renaissance madrigal style. The madrigals are set to poetry by Dante, Petrarch, and Guarini - some of the finest Italian poets. The performance by early music ARTEK and the vocalists will also demonstrate the use of Improvised ensemble ornamentation in madrigals that was expected in Marenzio's time - a lost art being rediscovered today.

Play | Saint Joan: George Bernard Shaw's Classic Drama Performed Outdoors

This timely play is based on historical records of the 1431 trial of French military icon and religious martyr Joan of Arc. The fully realized production is directed by Geoffrey Horne. Shaw's play fictionalizes the historical life of Joan of Arc who became a military leader and changed the history of her nation. Young, French farm girl Joan (Billie Andersson) hears saintly voices telling her to raise an army to fight the English. The failing English, threatened by her popularity and influence, convince the Church to have Joan tried for heresy and she is found guilty. When this force of nature refuses life in prison, she is tragically burned at the stake, becoming a symbol of faith, feminism, and individualism. Tickets are available at 5:45 p.m. the day of the performance.

Performance | Cave: Performance Art

An installation and live performance by Melvin "GRAVE" Guzman. The site of performance will include a preliminary video projection premiering the coinciding short, RUNS, that regards the collection of metal elements that comprise the work's structure, a sculptural installation with an olfactory element, and a live score by Brian Close. A cage made of repurposed steel armatures serves as support for heavily layered paintings and reclaimed or 'saved' items of refuse, building an abbreviated lexicon of the immediate urban space. A scavenged satellite dish with flashlights taped to its antennae provides self-illumination of the performance.

Play | The Martyrdom of Peter Ohey: Tiger in the Bathroom

A family's home life turns upside down when a tiger suddenly appears in their bathroom. As more and more absurd characters invade their home (Scientist, Government Official, Circus Manager, and others), the family must decide whether or not to give in and join the circus. One of Poland's most celebrated playwrights Slawomir Mrozek wrote this absurdist piece in 1959 as a subtle critique of the political system of the time. Even though Communism has fallen, The Martyrdom of Peter Ohey can still be perceived as commentary on excessive government interference in which a struggle arises between the individual and the presumed rights of society.
