Talk | Boxed in Brooklyn: Robert Gair and the Packaging Revolution (online)

In 1879, Scottish-born businessman Robert Gair stumbled upon an invention that would transform packaging and consumer products forever: a fast, mechanized way to manufacture cardboard boxes. This invention would grow into an empire of paper mills, box factories, printing plants, and even marketing and advertising arm--a vertically-integrated packaging company, based in today's DUMBO, Brooklyn. This virtual program will look at how, a century ago, this present-day corner of the "Brooklyn Tech Triangle" was also a center of innovation for packaged food and household products.

Screening | Quilted Steel: Screening and Discussion

Mahogany Browne’s choreopoem Quilted Steel is a visual literary work that brings the critical voices of system-impacted Black women to the stage. The interviews conducted by Priscilla Ocen served as the touchstone for this literary quilting, with a focus on centering the lives and dreams of formerly incarcerated women as a short film featuring actresses Dominique Toney, Yazmin Monet Watkins and Jasmine Williams. This anti-carceral collaboration between writer Mahogany L. Browne and literary organization PEN America is a call to arms. This project demands we interrogate the impact of mass incarceration and honor the human  condition on the road toward abolition. The night will host a premiere of the film, followed by a panel moderated by PEN America Deputy Director Nicole Shawan Junior.

Concert | Commemorating Artists Perished in the Holocaust: Concert and Readings

A program commemorating the creative spirit of the Terezin artists who perished in the Holocaust. His recently published book, Our Will to Live, gives voice to Jews silenced during the Holocaust by featuring newly translated writings, rarely seen art, and references to vintage and contemporary recordings of music. The project provides fullest picture of this particular time in Jewish history to date. Acclaimed violinist Michael Ludwig and pianist Beth Levin will perform works of Gideon Klein, Robert Dauber, and Erwin Schulhoff. The presentation will feature a visual sampling of rarely seen concert posters, programs, portraits, and illustrated scenes from a trove of hidden artworks by imprisoned artists recovered after liberation. Performance | repose without rest without end: Video Installation and Performance

The US premiere of Okwui Okpokwasili and Peter Born’s new video and sound installation and performance takes its point of departure from Okpokwasili’s performance work Adaku’s Revolt. This new piece focuses on a young Black girl who, as she is coming of age, rejects imposed beauty standards. She stops straightening her hair in refusal of the pain and damage created by chemical straighteners and hot irons used to tame unruly curls. In this new video installation, Okpokwasili draws connections between Adaku’s hair and tree roots. The girl’s refusal becomes a vehicle of resistance from which the artist draws connections with trees whose seeds were transported by fugitive slaves in their hair. These acts of resistance reproduced networks not unlike the way trees communicate through extensive root systems underground. Stories and seeds are passed on through multiple generations of humans and vegetation, refusing trauma while reproducing and celebrating resilience.
