Screening | Dance on Film: Haitian Folkloric Dance (online)

Dance scholar Dr. Dasha A. Chapman curates selections from and speaks about the Haitian folkloric dance materials held at the Library. These moving documents register points on the continuum of Haitian folkloric dance's history, which began with the documentation and staging of Haitian traditional dances in the 1930s and 1940s, and still evolves today with contemporary dance artists. What is Haitian folkloric dance? How was it first developed and how can we understand its more recent trajectories? Who are influential artists in the shaping, teaching, choreographing, and dissemination of the form? What motivates artists to continue shepherding Haitian folkloric dance despite the many social, cultural, and economic barriers to its thriving? Dr. Chapman will answer these questions and more. In this presentation, Chapman will share glimpses into archival footage of the sacred contexts from which this concert dance form derives, folkloric dance classes taught by luminary pedagogues, and performances by renowned companies and choreographers. Some artists featured include Jean-Leon Destine, Viviane Gauthier, Katherine Dunham, Lavinia Williams, Emerante de Pradines Morse, and Odette Weiner.

Book Signing | My Man Mitch: Growing Up Gay in Indiana

Ian Lewandowski's book is about the photographer’s home state of Indiana, manhood, and finding and maintaining queer space. After moving to New York to pursue a degree and career as a fine artist, Lewandowski, raised in a working-class, conservative, Christian environment, started to analyze these origins through photographic imagery native to Indiana and his family. Simultaneously he was photographing fellow gay men in their New York City apartments. Lewandowski combines his own photography with appropriated material, primarily Indiana high school yearbook photographs, as a dialogue on community and belonging, and a way to elaborate and expand upon his relationship to manhood and gay identity.

Performance | A fire circle for a public hearing: Performance Art

Paul Maheke is an artist working in performance, video, sculpture, and installation. His performances are predominantly based in dance and movement, often accompanied by poetic voice-overs or scripts; they explore the ways that bodies can act as archives of history and personal experience. A fire circle for a public hearing develops Maheke’s ongoing engagement with the potential of the body as an archive; the performance addresses how history, memory, and identity are formed. In the work, three performers channel different characters as if possessed by ghostly entities. Their movements and dialogue explore hypervisibility and erasure as they play out in historical marginalization and contemporary political movements. Maheke brings this compelling performance to the US for the first time.

Performance | Judge John Hodgman: Live Justice

Somewhere in the space between The Supreme Court and The People's Court lie problems so trivial and absurd that no judge in their right mind would take them on. Leaping into that yawning abyss is comedian John Hodgman, star of The Daily Show and a regular columnist for The New York Times Magazine, who brings his lightly twisted sense of humor (and ethics) to bear as decider Judge Hodgman for this live podcast taping. Assisted by his bailiff, comedian Jesse Thorn, Hodgman presents the final word on problems both piddling and petty with the mix of family-friendly comedy, pop culture obsession, and sheer unadulterated fake legal wisdom that's served his Webby Award-winning show so well for over 500 episodes. Experience the thrill of Hodgman's small claims court of the soul, live and in person!
