Jazz | Veteran Jazz Flautist of the New York Scene (online)

Flautist and saxophonist Carol Sudhalter didn’t take up music until her third year of college (biology major), but hasn’t let up since. She was the first graduate of Smith College to become a professional jazz musician, and in 1978 moved from Boston to New York City to join the all-women Latin band, Latin Fever. In 1986 she founded the 13-piece Astoria Big Band, and later founded several performance initiatives in Queens, including the Athens Square Park Jazz Mondays series, Astoria / LIC Waterfront Jazz Festival, and Sunset Jazz Concerts in Ralph Demarco Park. Sudhalter has worked with many notable artists including Etta Jones, Jimmy McGriff, Sarah McLawler, Henry Butler, Chico Freeman, Jimmy Cobb and Jason Marsalis. She currently holds court as the intrepid leader of Flushing Town Hall’s Louis Armstrong Legacy Jam.

Opening Reception | Kevin Ford: Duh

This show is a nod to the seemingly obvious subjects Ford captures in this selection of paintings. These are objects we see so frequently, appearing in the backgrounds of our lives and pictures, that their presence loses meaning. Ford is determined to find value in these objects, and through his nuanced paint handling, he transforms the obvious into the exotic. Please join us for our opening reception on June 30, from 6-8PM.  The press release is attached below and as always let me know if you have any questions.

Performance | A fire circle for a public hearing: Performance Art

Paul Maheke is an artist working in performance, video, sculpture, and installation. His performances are predominantly based in dance and movement, often accompanied by poetic voice-overs or scripts; they explore the ways that bodies can act as archives of history and personal experience. A fire circle for a public hearing develops Maheke’s ongoing engagement with the potential of the body as an archive; the performance addresses how history, memory, and identity are formed. In the work, three performers channel different characters as if possessed by ghostly entities. Their movements and dialogue explore hypervisibility and erasure as they play out in historical marginalization and contemporary political movements. Maheke brings this compelling performance to the US for the first time.

Concert | 2-Time Latin Grammy Award-Winning Combo

The lead members of C4 Trio are specialists in the cuatro, a long-necked four-stringed miniature guitar that shimmers with percussive energy. The cuatro is of particular importance in C4's home country of Venezuela, where it is generally acknowledged as the national instrument. Originally formed by Jorge Glem, Hector Molina, and Edward Ramirez, then later rounded out by the addition of bassist Rodner Padilla, all of the band are renowned solo and session performers in their own right, making C4 Trio the greatest cuatro supergroup in the world. Currently based out of Miami, the band finds musical inspiration in traditions from around the South American diaspora while still remaining true to their Venezuelan spirit.

Play | Richard III: Shakespeare Drama Outdoors

Tony Award nominee Robert O’Hara (Slave Play, The Public’s Barbecue) brings his sharp wit and storytelling genius with a bold new production of Richard III. One of Shakespeare’s most indelible villains, Richard is determined to be King. Following his lust for power and the throne, he manipulates, kidnaps, and kills all who stand between him and his throne, using brilliant words and dark charm to conceal his dismantling of government and justice. This masterful dive into the muddy middle between political genius and violent power grab arrives with piercing relevancy and electrifying drama.
