Brooklyn-based synth auteurs Nation of Language first arrived in 2020 as one of the most heralded new acts inspired by the early new-wave and punk movements. The band quickly earned a reputation for delivering frenzied nights of unconventional bliss to rapt audiences, and established themselves as bright young stars emerging from a crowded NYC landscape prior to their release of one of the most critically acclaimed debut albums of the year - Introduction, Presence. Lecture | Transgender People, the Nazi State, and the Holocaust (online)

In the 1920s, Berlin was home to a thriving transgender community, with trans-focused magazines, famous drag clubs, and Magnus Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Science, where some trans people went for gender-affirming care. Hitler's rise to power in 1933 changed everything. In this talk, Laurie Marhoefer explores what happened trans people under the Nazi state, beginning with pre-war Berlin and then under the repressive Nazi regime. Marhoefer will look specifically at violence against trans women that was recorded in police files from the era. Laurie Marhoefer is the Jon Bridgman Endowed Professor of History at the University of Washington.

Musical | J O B - A Simple Man: An Immigrant's Journey from Russia to New York

In an intense and musical dramatization, J O B - A Simple Man tells the story of an emigrant's journey from the old world-a little village in Russia-to the new world in New York. Mendel Singer, much like Job in the Hebrew Bible, loses everything. He despairs and curses, but ultimately experiences a miracle. Adapted by Karen-Maria Bille from Joseph Roth's 1930 novel of the same name, this powerful production stars award-winning Danish actor Ina-Miriam Rosenbaum in every role. Rosenbaum is directed by Rolf Heim and joined onstage by principal oboist of the Danish Royal Orchestra Henrik Goldshmidt and Indian-Danish accordion virtuoso Anders Singh Vesterdahl. As audiences follow Mendel Singer from joy to deep despair, and through to hope and comfort, the performance's offbeat music lifts the story of one person into a universally relatable tale about the experience of being a refugee and the challenges of encountering a new world.

Book Discussion | Poet Anne Carson and The New Yorker Theater Critic Discuss her Book about Herakles (in-person and online)

The award-winning poet and translator Anne Carson joins The New Yorker theater critic Hilton Als to read and discuss H of H Playbook, her recreation of Euripides's 5th-century BC play Herakles. Carson's book is a "strange and surprisingly timely" reimagination of Euripides' play. She reads selections from the book along with Hilton Als, followed by an interview with Sam Anderson from The New York Times Magazine. The myth of Herakles, aka Hercules, is the tale of a "brutalized and brutalizing hero." Returning home after years of his famous and violent "labors," Herakles finds he cannot adapt himself to a life of peacetime domesticity. He goes berserk and murders his whole family. Suicide is his next idea, but thanks to the intervention of his friend Theseus, Herakles comes to believe he is not indelibly stained by his own crimes, nor is his life without value.
