Bassel & The Supernaturals tells the story of Bassel Almadani's experience as a first generation Syrian-American using soulful melodies, funk inspired grooves, and captivating lyrics regarding love, loss, and the war in Syria. Deeply inspired by Otis Redding, Bassel uses the stage as a vehicle to engage audiences in over 100 different cities across North America. In addition to performing in major festivals, performance halls, concert series, and clubs, the group works closely with organizations on events and residencies that build awareness and empathy for Syrian refugees. Samaya Glazier is a young passionate artist based in Brooklyn, New York. In elementary school, her work was the only one of her school to be chosen to be entered into a city-wide contest hosted by the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. As Samaya and her work has matured, she tends to gravitate toward portraits of people and animals. While she has an uncanny ability to copy works of the masters by sight, she loves to create her own art which is expressive with color.

Jazz | Virtuosic Gen-Z Jazz Duo in an Outdoor Concert

DOMi & JD BECK, the astoundingly virtuosic Gen-Z jazz duo, find both humor and greatness in harmonic complexity, rhythmic shiftiness, and speed, evoking '70s jazz fusion and the colorful blips of 2000s Pokemon soundtracks. They can sound electronic, channeling IDM and boom bap. Sometimes they're stuffed into a bathroom and sometimes the drums are muffled by pretzels stacked on the hi-hat, or toilet paper tossed on the snare. Their acclaimed debut album Not Tight is an attempt to bottle their goofy magic.

Jazz | Acclaimed Jazz Drummer Plays in the Park

Drummer Winard Harper is passionate about jazz. Inspired by the musicianship of greats such as Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Jackie McLean, Cannonball Adderley, Dr. Billy Taylor, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins, Harper has been the leader and musical inspiration for a vibrant sextet for almost a decade. The group appears regularly all over the United States from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to Yoshi's, the legendary West Coast jazz club. Although clearly the dominant force behind this extraordinarily gifted ensemble, Harper has surrounded himself with superbly talented young guardians of the jazz tradition (including Lawrence Clark, Ameen Saleem, Josh Evans, Stacy Dillard, and Alioune Faye), who are as entertaining to watch as they are to listen to.

Concert | Freedom Is a Constant Struggle Concert

Award-winning composer and musician Tamar-kali joins forces with opera and theatre director James Blaszko and the American Composers Orchestra to bring Freedom Is a Constant Struggle. A second-generation musician with roots in the coastal Sea Islands of South Carolina, Tamar-kali has designed an evening of orchestral performances and readings that highlight the African-American struggle to reap the benefits of liberty and justice defined as a part of American citizenry. The concert traces the African-American struggle to achieve freedom—from the call to abolish chattel slavery through the Civil War, from reconstruction and the early movement for racial equality to the ‘60s civil rights movement, all the way to our present-day fights for equity. The performance includes the world premiere of Tamar-kali’s Sea Island Symphony: Red Rice, Cotton and Indigo, and spotlights pivotal works by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, Nina Simone, and Ida B. Wells, among other notable works. Featuring an orchestra, choir, guest vocalists, orators, and ring shouters, this will be an unforgettable, not-to-be missed evening of innovation, experimentation, and introspection.
